Remembering my first workout

It seems like a no-brainer now, but 32 weeks ago I was so intimidated by the task in front of me. My wife and I had made the decision to join the gym and spend a good chunk of time there. That was the easy part - the hard part was this beast of a treadmill standing in front of me, a torture device if ever there was one - why are people willingly doing this to themselves? I was so out of shape I'm not sure there was even a word for it. I boldly stepped on and made the decision to not stop walking for the next 30 minutes. I started at 2.5 mph -well, that seemed easy enough, let's push it and see what happens. I climbed the ladder up to 3.0 - hey I think I can do this! Ok, let's try 3.2. (okay big fella, Rome was not built in a day - let's go back down). 1.43 miles in 30 minutes. I hadn't walked that far in years. And it wasn't that hard (It wasn't that easy, but it WASN'T THAT HARD.) And then I showed up the next day, and the next, and the next....

This morning I ran 4 miles in under 40 minutes. This year I've raced a 5k, went on an 11 mile hike, and have pushed myself to the limits constantly, but I think that 1.43 miles was the most important thing I have done, because I'm never going back to where I was. I am thankful every day that I took that first step.

Congrats! I'm 10 weeks in and in my first workout I could barely ride 30 minutes on the stationary bike at Level 1 and it took me over 5:42 to go one mile. Yesterday I rode the bike for 50 minutes on Level 6 and did a 3:56 mile. It's such an awesome feeling of accomplishment!

You. Look. INCREDIBLE, OP. Seriously. Congrats on all your hard work!

The first workout can be a killer, but it sure gets addicting...
  • My first workout wasnt quite a month ago. I could do a mere ten minutes on the treadmill bike and elliptical, for a total of 30 minutes exercising. i thought I was doing a good job even then. but now I can do an hour or more on the elliptical and I am going at times over 6 mph! It feels great. Congratulations on your success! It is a big deal. Dont discount your achievements, they are huge
