Has anyone experienced the 80/10/10 diet? I bought the book by Dr. Graham and wondered if anyone has any feedback on it. It consists of mainly eating fruit, some nuts/seeds, and some vegetables. I was thinking about incorporating some of it into my diet but not sure.

I've never tried (nor would I want to) but I've heard from people who have tried it that it was great for a while (like up to a month) and then it started making them sick.

I would say that it's not meant for long-term use! However, I do eat unlimited fruits every day, because I do think that fruits are SUPER healthy.

How much protein would you be getting in a day?
  • When I googled it the diet sounded great at first until I saw a sample plan for a day. To get adequate calories one has to eat mass amounts of fruit. He recommends eating the same fruit in a big portion, like a pound of bananas for instance. I'm a banana fanatic but I doubt even I could eat that!

I'm completely advocate the idea of having a plant based diet (I'm vegan!) but that seems a little extreme!

Thats my question too... I would imagine you would have to eat A LOT of spinach or tofu to get an adequate amount of protein!

    you get 10% protein
80% carbs, 10% protein, and 10% fats is what it stands for

Sounds like too much sugar. No thanks.
  • Do you read nomeatathlete? I believe someone on there (not the author, but someone he interviewed a while ago, I believe) followed the diet. I remember him talking about how many bananas he eats in a day, it was crazy.

Haven't heard of that one. I read a lot of nutrition books and usually just take the good parts from them to incorporate into my diet. There's always SOME good tips in every book, but I usually don't follow any of them religiously word for word. For example, I love the Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose, because I learned about food combining, juicing and eating more raw food- plus great recipe ideas in there. Love The Body Ecology Diet for learning about probiotics and coconut kefir. Loved The Skinny ***** and The Kind Diet for the vegan ideas and those two convinced me to not eat meat at the very least.

I find it really interesting to learn about all kinds of nutrition viewpoints and I could see how eating mostly fruit for a month could be beneficial for a short term cleanse. :)

I just had to google it and here's the link to that-

After reading this, it almost sounds like it would be fun to try this out! I do love me some fruit... but I would miss my whole grains, beans, and veggies too much to have this be a permanent thing. Maybe for a week or two, just to try it out, could be a fun and healthy experiment.

This is the expert/plan/book that killed me as a raw vegan. I was doing just fine until I got hold of this one.

Of course, that's just my experience, but I would put it down, and run away.

It sounds a little crazy to me but I like the idea of eating more fruits so I think I'll add more fruits and less hemp protein powder

I used to eat A LOT of fruit and hit a plateau for a while when I was doing this and had no idea why. It was way too much sugar! For example, in a week I would eat a bundle or two of bananas, 2lbs of strawberries, 1 pineapple, 1 cantaloupe, and at least one apple a day, all this to myself. Just fyi, but yeah like people are saying, do your research. I've cut way back on fruits and eat lots of veggies now.

    Number 1- I don't eat this way.
Number 2- If you eat a well balanced plant based diet, you get MORE than enough protein.
Number 3- If you are interested in this, google FREELEE and you can also find her on 30bananas.com or something like that!

I do eat unlimited fruit in the mornings until 1pmish. I'm not afraid of it like some people. Sure there are carbs, but when you workout like I do, you need them. I also enjoy my green smoothies every morning before fruit. I typically eat raw until dinner and LOVE the way it makes me feel. This had nothing to do with 80/10/10, but if you are veggie/Vegan already, you know that eating raw until dinner is pretty much what you do anyway if you are eating whole foods and not processed V foods.

Anyway, good luck! What did you think of the book? I wanted to read it just because, but ehhh, I dunno, my book list is pretty long! :)

The book is worth the read. Not sure if I agree with everything he is saying but there are a lot of good advice in it as well. Freelee is awesome if you know who she is.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the raw food diet, but found that eating tons of nuts and high fat was not great for me. I have since switched to 80/10/10 after reading Douglas Graham's book and feel the best I ever felt. Migraines gone, losing weight easily, skin looks good, menstrual cramps gone, increased clarity, I understand difficult concepts more easily, and always feel energized. This diet makes so much sense and really works with my body. A few of my friends have gone 80/10/10 as well and healed some major issues they have dealt with for years that doctors said could never go away.. I really believe in it and feel that anyone who has opinions about this should read the book first before making assumptions! Also, try it for a month and see how you feel.. it's a life changer :)
