Losing weight in a weird way?

Welp, I've been losing weight seriously for about 8 months now, and it's been going pretty slow but that's probably because I'm not that big in the first place. But the way I have been losing is kind of weird.. I'll fluctuate between like 2 lbs of one weight for like 3 weeks to a month then all of a sudden I'll lose like 2-3 lbs in 2 days. Then stay at that weight/fluctuate about a pound above/below , then BOOM another 2-3 lbs.
Shouldn't it be a more steady/slow pace?
any ideas what's going on?

Not a clue....but mine does the same thing! Nothing for 3 weeks, then like 5 lbs every week for the next 3...

lol Id like to hear some answers to your question too. :)
  • It's so weird! I mean it averages out to MAYBE a half pound to a pound a week. if you think about it.. but it just is so weird and kind of discouraging

This sounds like an argument for weighing less often

I think it's common for this to happen, I know I go through it, too. Let's blame the moon.

It's normal. Weight loss is not a linear activity. It's a biological process.
  • I just feel like if I'm consistantly burning more calories than I take in on a day to day basis I should be losing weight in a consistent way

That's not how it works, especially if you don't have a lot to lose and have too big a calorie deficit. Losing fat is HARD. Fat is part of the endocrine system and has a high priority as far as the body is concerned. If you have a lot of body fat, it will drop off (relatively) quickly, but when you have a lower body fat % than your body hangs on to it, as it needs a certain amount for proper function, and if you have too big a deficit, than your body does other things to avoid burning fat, and "hoards calories." You have to convince your body that it's going to have a constant supply of the fatty acids it needs to keep the endocrine system running properly. That's why weight doesn't drop in a linear fashion, your body hangs onto fat until it feels safe burning it off.

That's a simplified explanation, I'm not a biologist, but this is what I've read on it.

This makes so much sense, it's scary! I've been eating lots more fish and taking fish oil capsules for the last month or so. Will this help convince my body that fatty acids will always be available? I know I feel better since taking them and my HDL level is dropping, Thanks for the great information.

I wouldn't be surprised if hormonal fluctuations were playing a part in it. That's my excuse anyway.

My doctor said weight loss for some people looks like stairs - flat for a while, some loss, followed by more flat and loss periods.

I like the stairs explanation, that’s how mine has been too. It’s very interesting to look back on after a period of time, but it does get frustrating when you know you’ve been busting your butt the whole week and every time you step on the scale it’s the exact same number. …Then you lose a load in a day and wonder why it couldn’t have just been a nice even loss going down just a little bit each day instead. Hang in there and try not to let the numbers get you down!

Well just so you know the picture in my ticker isn't me! It's where I want to be, my default picture is me though!
I don't even know if I have a secret, I just noticed the ab definition this past weekend!
