I didn't read that book, but there are so many people out there busting their butts exercising and restricting calories like crazy who can't lose.

Interestingly, beginning about 18 mos ago, and over the period of a year, I gained a "mystery" 15 lbs. even though I had been working out 6 days a week for the past 7 years and never before had a weight problem. As soon as I began gaining, I began dieting, but it didn't work--I just kept gaining.

For me, it was the fact that I wasn't eating ENOUGH. My weight gains corresponded with adding in significant new weekly activities without adding any extra calories. When I began dieting, I was cutting my fuel down even further, slowing my metabolism, getting tired and fatter and didn't know why.

Finally I found MFP and a thread that explained it. Amazingly (counterintuitively!), I ate more and lost the weight. I still can't believe how cool it is that I get to eat more and lose weight. I've lost 14 of my 15 lbs. now, so I'm thrilled.

Eating less calories than you expend won't make you fat. It's impossible.

Well, I lived it, so there.

None of those say eating less makes you gain weight. "Starvation mode," which I think is used a little too much on here, may stall your weight loss but eating too few calories cannot possibly make you gain weight.

I am usually very patient but I am not in a good mood today and you're a pain in my *kitten*. I just responded to the OP in a positive way and mentioned MY history. I did not try to sell YOU or anyone else on my way of eating (not that I give a damn how fat or not fat you are or what you choose to eat). So anyway, all I can tell you is, it happened to me; I gained from eating too few calories while adding in extreme training over a one year period. I learned what was happening, ate more, and lost weight. boom.

Nobody is debating that reducing carbs can be and effective fat-loss strategy. It works because of the reduction in CALORIES, period. .

By replacing it with more bad science? I'll pass.
    [/quote]

This is so not true for everyone, i can eat the same calories but if i have too much carbs i will gain, if i cut my carbs down to 40grams or under , eating the same amount of calories i will lose.

I'm pretty busy, but maybe I'll get to the links sometime today. I'm my own testimonial, though. Since I went cold-turkey on carbage in February this year--cutting out foods made with flour, pasta, starches, anything out of a box--I've been losing fat steadily and have energy to do high-impact Zumba workouts 2-3 times a week, with plenty of energy to spare.
I get my carbs from good, healthy vegetables, and I haven't upped my protein from what it was before.
As I mentioned before, this works. It works for me, it may not work for you.

I am glad that you found what works for you. But, as you point out, it's not the only way. I eat healhy and that includes healthy carbs. I have high carbs days and low carbs days because I don't specifically think about how many carbs I'm having. And I have energy for high-impact Zumba 6 days a week, plus moderate strength training 4-5 days a week. With hiking and playing with the grandkids thrown in occasionally.

I have no problem with low carb diets, I realize that works for many people. And I realize that some people have diseases that necessitate it. But any book, movie, blog, or any other form of media that says whole grains are bad for everyone is a crock.

I haven't read this book so maybe that last remark was way off base, but I have seen many posts about this Taubes person that suggest he shares this vew.

No. I knew why I got fat and I knew what I had to do about it.

    Why even bother commenting?

because she feels the need to coment on every topic on mfp

OMG Zumba is all over the place where I live. I think you could take 2 classes every day if you wanted. But I do the DVDs because I don't like to add another 40 min to my workout (20 min drive each way to the nearest class).

I've been gone for awhile. And clearly, I've missed something. When I left, there were polite discussions where people might have debated from time to time, but apparently now we just attack each other?

The bottom line is that everyone will figure out their own path, and what works for them or makes them feel good. I read the book, and while I disagree because of my own experiences, all this lady was doing was starting a post to see if anyone else shared her point of view. If you don't agree, that's ok. And if you DO agree, I didn't see her asking for someone to attack on her behalf?

No one is right. No one is wrong. Because no one is you. Stop effing cutting each other down.

LOL! I love me some Zumba, and I would do it more often, but honestly, I've got 4 kids and a husband and a life to live! I'm not gonna kill myself working out, when the results of me losing weight with excercise are sketchy, at best!

No one is right. No one is wrong. Because no one is you. Stop effing cutting each other down.

Don't know how long you've been gone. But, in the last several months there are several people on MFP who go out of there way to blast anyone who has a positive experience or testimonial about low-carb dieting. It gets tiring. These "trolls" don't seem content to stay on threads that support their own diet lifestyle. They just come in with their negative information, saying we're all doing it wrong and we're all gonna die! Like I originally put at the beginning of this thread...OP wasn't asking for people to bash a book they haven't read.
I don't know, I guess when I see a post about something I don't necessarily agree with, I just keep on going. I never type "high carb" or "energy balance" into my search box. I stay on threads where I can offer advice and support, i.e. not on calorie counting, low-fat threads. Just sayin'.

I learned what was happening, ate more, and lost weight. boom.

Save your *****iness for something else rather than calling someone who's trying to be helpful a liar.

Amen SleepyTexan! The three trolls on this thread are so obnoxiously hitting every low carb testimonial and sucess story, it's getting really annoying. Mods must do something about these trolls and flamers.......

OP, your testimony is awesome. I love reading anyone's testimony and sucess story. Glad you have found what worked best for you. Happy training!

Ahh so anyone who does not agree with you is a troll , hmm intresting, i will make note of this

Yeah, your sooo right. We will just take the word of a blog.

No thanks. There is more truth to Taubes Science due to his extensive research with world renowned scientists and doctors.

    LULZ

Nobody is asking you to "take the word of a blog".

If you had bothered to READ, you would see that these articles provide ARGUMENTS based on things we call REFERENCES, several of them from the very scientists performed the original research that Taubes is referencing.

Several of them have come out and said that Taubes has misunderstood and/or misrepresented their work.

"Ask Stanford endocrinologist Gerald Reaven. He's best known for calling attention to "Syndrome X," a cluster of conditions that may indicate a predisposition to diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Among Reaven's recommendations for lowering the risk of that syndrome is to reduce consumption of highly refined carbohydrates such as those present in soft drinks and table sugar. But that's where the overlap with Atkins ends.

"I thought [Taubes'] article was outrageous," Reaven says. "I saw my name in it and all that was quoted to me was not wrong. But in the context it looked like I was buying the rest of that crap." He adds, "I tried to be helpful and a good citizen, and I ended up being embarrassed as hell. He sort of set me up."

"“He took this weird little idea and blew it up, and people believed him,” says John Farquhar, a professor emeritus of medicine at Stanford University’s Center for Research in Disease Prevention. Taubes quoted Farquhar, but misrepresented his views. “What a disaster,” says Farquhar.
