How do I figure out how fast I am walking?

I hope I am logging my exercise correctly - I have no idea how fast I am walking, so I figure out how far I've walked using www.walkjogrun.net and time myself. If I walk a mile in 20 minutes, I assume I am walking at 3 mph. Is that the best way of going about it? I don't want to over-estimate, or under-estimate either.

Yeah! I've been wondering this same question myself. That is the first thing I thought of, timing how long it takes to walk a mile. That's definitely the most accurate way to go about it. I just didn't know how far a mile was. I was at the gym the other day and set a treadmill to 3mph just to see how fast it was so I could get a bit of an idea, but definitely timing yourself to the distance of 1 mile would be the best way

    A mile is 5,280 feet.
I walk from my house to the end of the neighborhood, which is a half mile, and walk back in a total of 20 minutes.
20 minutes is 3 miles per hour.
  • Google "pace calculator" then fill in the time and distance, it will do the rest. Here's a link for one... http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/4/4_1/96.shtml

I have a pedometer on my phone. But before I got this phone I would gmap my route and figure it out that way. I average 4mph now when I walk, but sometimes I have my kids with me and am lucky to get in 2mph.

A 4mph walk is very fast pave walk which you almost struggle with so if your not pushing hard then you can figure under 4 mph.

Well, i'm using my iPod. It has a pedometer on it.

I convert the steps to miles, then the steps per minute into miles per hour. Under cardio, I look up walking and choose the entry closest to my mph calculation then, enter the time walked and the calories burned from the iPod into MFP.

I have a pedometer on my Android too (FREE APP). I use that when we go to "walking places" then I enter the speed and calories burned into MFP.

I just downloaded "My Tracks" by Google onto my Droid, it is a really great program that does all of the tracking and calculating, free. :)

That sounds like a good way to me. :) I usually log mine at a slower pace though, just because I'd rather under-estimate my exercise calories than over-estimate.

    distance/time= speed

    1 mile
    20 minutes (.333 of 1 hour (20/60))

    1/.333= 3mph

If you use the Google Earth desktop client, you can draw a path for the walk/run/log roll you plan to do. I used to do this before I got a smart phone. Its somewhat accurate but better then just guessing. I also suggest Cardio Trainer, that has been the best dist/speed calc so far for me. If you have a droid phone you can search the market on your pc. https://market.android.com/

I use mapmyrun.com, log the run or walk on the map, then time the workout with a pedometer, or a stopwatch on my hrm. Your solution seems ok.

I like My Tracks too. Just have to remember it is accurate to within 200 yards, plus or minus. I have a route I like to use and recorded three consecutive laps and took the average for the true didstance.
