Exercise idea for disabled

I have hip and knee arthritis (as well as back, neck, you name it!) but have just been diagnosed with diabetes and high cholesteral. I can not do much exercise wise, but know I need to do something. Is there are passive exercises I can try? I'd love to do yoga or tai chi, but think they might be more aggressive than I can manage.

Do you have access to a pool? Swimming and water aerobics are wonderful and very kind to sore joints.

Could your doctor recommend you to a physical therapist? A P.T, would give you exercises to challenge you and improve your arthritis with aggravating your hip and knee.
  • I just joined a hotel pool for the "off season" here for cheap. My knees hurt after I walk so I avoid long walks which doesn't help with my weight loss! Swimming is the way for me.

I agree. If you have a local gym or YMCA in your neighborhood, they offer water aerobic classes that will still be intense but easy on the joints. If not, maybe start with walking until you build up to working out.

I have similar issues. I do PT exercises on my bed. (can't get up off the floor once I get down there right now) I also second the pool therapy. I did a couple months of that before my knee replacement and will be doing it again in another two weeks, once my land-based PT is over. Taking most of the weight off the joints is crucial. Look into your local rec center or YMCA or YWCA. They have specific classes for arthritis. Sometimes they are only for folks over 55 but with a doctor's note they will usually let you join in.

    Good luck!

I agree,, I have bad ankle and do water aerobic 3 or 4 times a week,, it is very easy on joints,, no wonder why the class is mostly seniors but younger adults enjoy the class too..

Try it,, you will like it,,

If your gym don't have a pool, check the local public pool. I would bet they have the water aerobic class.

I agree with all the replies to date. I have knee and hip issues and have been able to do water-based exercise for 5+ years now. Not only does it help with weight loss, but it relieves pain and is fun.
