I have never really been into weight lifting. I just dont really like it. I get bored and frustrated. Anyway, I have learned that I really SHOULD weight lift.. that it can help me to lose weight a little faster.. so I started weight lifting.. well I have my BF help me because he is all into working out and boxing and all that stuff.. well.. we went today and I did 30 min of weight lifting. I FELT the burn! I still feel the burn as I am typing this lol.. he feels I just gave up and didnt push myself to do a whole hour like I could have. but I felt like a half hour was plenty for me.. especially someone who has NO strength when it comes to weight lifting and I have never really done it. He is telling me what I did today was for nothing because I didnt do enough.. What do you guys think? From what I have learned.. I feel starting off slow is good and I did just fine for me.. and that I will eventually build up some endurance.. i also feel like there IS such a thing as over doing it.. where he doesnt seem to feel that way.. So I am feeling a little discouraged like my 30 mins of weight lifting today did me no good.. =[

That's BS. Any weight lifting will do you some good. Take your time and build up to it. Nothing sexier than a toned and fit woman. Way to go!0

Forget your BF, what does he know~ Your body is telling you did something and it was worth it. You are a beginner and I actually think you did more than expected. I have been working out for 14+ years and I only do weights for 30 minutes!!!! The important thing is that you FEEL it. It's not the amount of time but the quality of the moves. Guys are weird anyway, they think that slamming, huffing, puffing, growling, and all that crazyness is necessary to get a good workout, but it's just annoying!!!! If you pay attention, they may be in the gym for 1-2 hours, but how much of that time do they actually "workout"??? Good work and keep it up!!!0

I think you should return the favor next time he doesn't go as long as you want him to, and see how he likes it. Be sure to remind him that it didn't do anything.0

THIS.
Next time, leave the boyfriend/turdmonkey at home and do it on your own.0 -
I would recommend getting a personal trainer for a couple sessions just to set you up with a couple different workouts. Let the trainer know what your experience is and limits are and you'll get something you can stick with and maybe even enjoy. And you'll know that the time you're putting in is right for you.
If you don't like the first trainer, try someone else.
A lot of clubs will give you at least a free session with your membership, just to learn how to use the equipment without getting hurt.0 -

LOL! Thanks guys =] I have been in a boot camp class and being on here I have learned alot about working out! Even on topics that involve things I dont do.. but I was really second guessing what I "know"today!
my BF could NOT do as much cardio as I do lol! I easily do an hour on the elliptical with the crossramp on 15 and the resistance on 9 =] he couldnt last 10 minutes with both levels being on 0 lmao..
I am glad there are guys in here agreeing with me! Definitely helps.. I tried explaining to him that he is use to working out since he has been doing it since he was in utero lol.. but whatever some dudes are hard headed.. I just need him to teach me the moves then I dont need him to help me haha.. Glad what I did today actually counted for something =] **phew**0 -

Our gym does give you a free personal trainer for 1 month.. I have been thinking about it.. I am just so weird around other people when it comes to working out =/ But lately I have been giving it ALOT of thought lol.. gotta just get rid of that "uncomfortableness"around someone new while working out..0 -

Do it! They can teach you all about proper form as well. The hardest part for me about lifting when I started was maintaining my form. It's really important though to avoid injury and maximize efficiency.0 -

What you did definitely counts and it's not like an egg timer goes off in your muscles that says *DING* YOURE DONE!.
Now having said that, and joking aside, you SHOULD strive to (forgive the term here please) lift like a man. Get to the point where you can put in a good hour of HEAVY lifting, and really push yourself, and you'll make great progress (and no, you wont end up bulky contrary to myth).
But you are correct, you should ease into it to a degree, and if you did 30 minutes or about half of the volume that he did, that's a great start.0 -

Yes, I definitely have a problem keeping my form! I can tell that just by looking at myself doing it hahaha..0 -
Guys shouldn't train girls unless they are willing to understand that WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT! Women can weight train with the best of the men but if you are new to it...go slow at first. Work on form, try different exercises for different muscle groups and test your ability to complete 10-12 reps with proper form for each set. Hire a trainer for a few times to help you figure out what is best for you. If you get too sore at first, you will give up. Easing into it is a better way. I love lifting weights and test myself with as much as I can handle but I have been doing it for years (and I still use a trainer). Weight lifting will create muscle that revs up your metabolism and continues to burn calories when you aren't doing anything. Muscle is prettier than fat and looks better in and out of clothes. It is empowering to see how strong you are but pushing past your limits will cause injuries and then you can't do anything.0

lol! I would of course like to be able to lift more and go a little longer.. and I know it doesnt make you bulky.. (what DOES make you bulky?!?!?!) In my 30 minutes I did 4 sets of butterflies, squats (with the 20lb bar thing), curls, these other things where you start bending down trying to touch your toes.. you come up to your hips then lift the bar above your head.. not sure what its called.. and this other exercise where you touch your elbow to your opposite knee.. and each set was between 10-20 reps.. needless to say.. my arms are KILLING me lol0 -

I agree! Women are SO different. lol.. I know that my BF knows what he is doing.. BUT he is a pusher. he feels you need to do as many sets as you can without stopping and you arent done until you cant even lift your arms to scratch the back of your head! lol.. So yea.. he is a pain.. it just sucks because I am most comfortable with him. but since he is OBVIOUSLY going to kill me a trainer is starting to sound good lol! Working out with him today totally killed my motivation thats for sure. it sucked. But since now I know that my 30 minutes is good I will continue to do the weight lifting every other day.. I am glad to be able to say that I have learned enough to not let someone who doesnt know when to quit hurt me. I just need him to show me the exercises and how to do them right.. I choose how much weight and how long I do it. but it does sound like a trainer will be good. I am going to talk to the gym about it soon!0 -

I love your siggy with the ways to lose weight! Its so true!0 -
I'm going to have to disagree with the recommendation to get a personal trainer. Personal training certificates are a dime-a-dozen, and for every competent trainer, there are 10-20 knuckleheads who have no business training clients.
At the very least, do your research before hiring one, and conduct an extensive interview with him/her before hiring them.0 -

I can understand the apprehension about trainers and agree that they should carefully chosen. I know there are a lot of bad ones out there.
That being said, mine is amazing. He's been an integral part of helping me transform myself. Most of his clients are bodybuilders and fitness models. He's a former bodybuilder as well and has been training men and women for competition for the last 30 years. He also is the owner of my gym.
To the OP: find a good one if you're going to use one.0
