Intense hip pain???

I woke up in the middle of the night with intense hip pain. I've never had anything like it before. It felt like my hip was on fire. I was in such bad pain that I was actually crying (...and I have a high pain tolerance!) and I took like three Advil or something. I had it the next night as well but not as bad? Occasionally my hip hurts when I walk...but never when I'm inactive. Has anyone ever experienced this? Does anyone know anything about it? Thanks.

Might be something you should talk to your doctor about.

where exactly was the pain? deep in the hip joint or elsewhere?
  • Yes! Lower back problems was the cause for me. Go see your doctor and ask for an MRI - that will detect herniated (inflammed) disc. The pain is intense, worse than labor. Do not let it go thinking that pills will make it better, at least let the doctor rule it out. Good luck.

Yes. Deep in the hip joint.
  • Do you have lordosis or hyperlordosis? It's an exaggerated curvature of the lower back. I have hyperlordosis and it makes my hips hurt. It's very common in dancers. It puts a lot of strain on the lower back. I'd talk to your doctor.

My vote is to see the Dr as you couold really hurt yourself if you have a major problem and it does get diagnosed quickly.
    Good luck

If the pain is in posterior or going down your back side and into your legs it is sciatic = which likely means your piriformus is tight and pinching the nerve.

If it is lateral and on the side it could be tight TFL muscles..

There are many things that could be going on. More specific information regarding the hip pain is needed.

Burning = nerve - usually. I would try stretching those hip and glute muscles really really well and often.. see where that takes you. If it persists I would see a specialist.

Deep in the hip joint could be bursitis.. It could also be referral pain from a trigger point.. meaning the source of the pain may not be local to the hip.

Yes, I have bad knees and when my knees are at their worst, my Hip really has problems. I also have a friend who started suddenly having hip problems (with no other sypmptoms) and after MANY tests to diagnose discovered she had a bad knees and actually was already at a stage 4 and needed knee replacement. Has had her knee replaced and all is well. Don't want to scare you but definitely should be checked...best wishes!

Yes. Deep in the hip joint.

i finally went to an orthopedist for mine, but of course everyone's pain is different, and the hips are pretty large areas. he shuffled me off to a physical therapist, who spent about an hour with me, and thinks it's probably bursitis - which you can get deep in the hip joints and elsewhere.

it's only brought me to tears once, but that was when i was lying down, which was odd.

the ab exercises, icing, and really mild stretches have helped, but it's only been two weeks. the physical restrictions are a pain in the *kitten*, ironically enough - no running, no walking over 3 mph (my normal walking pace, without speeding, is around 3.7), nothing that's going to stretch the back hamstrings - no squats, no lunges, etc. but that's the point, i think - for me, it's taken years to get to this point, so i'm not going to fix it overnight.

i'd definitely recommend an orthopedist, and sooner than later, especially if your pain is way up there on the intensity scale.

you're not wearing those 'toning' shoes are you?
Get a dr opinion, x-ray and deep tissue massage. Deep tissue massage isn't a medical neccessity but feels mighty good

You've already gotten some pretty great advice. I'd try the stretching, massage and warm bath because I hate spending money on Drs. If it is very intense you should see a dr could be a number of issues from nerves to muscles, tendons and bursitis-
I have two screws in my pelvic bone due to it broke it in two places- my left leg sometimes gets weak and pain/ sore I stretch it and usually makes matters much better but I know the cause of my pain-

I had bad hip pain also - especially at night, sleeping on my side. My other joints would ache also. Long story short, I recently found out I have a vitamin d deficiency. (Your level should be at minimum 30 and mine was 11.) I was put on prescription D and the aches and pain went away after my second dosage. (50,000 IU, once a week for a month). I couldn't believe how much better I felt. My doc did the blood test as part of routine work - I didn't tell her about my aches and pain - just figured I was getting older. I am SO glad I found out about this. Google vitamin D deficiency and pain and you will find loads of info.

This may seem pretty basic but have you tried any yoga? GREAT stretches for hips!
  • I have this too!! I started working out really intensely in a short period of time and about 6 weeks in I was in absolute agony. My doctor said it was most likely tendonitis, an inflammation in the hip joints and tendons.

I can't afford physiotherapy, so this is my "hip pain go away plan"

    1. stop all cardio and exercise involving your leg and hip joints immediately, including running, elipticals and stairmasters.
    2. ice your hips at least once a day for 5-10 minutes
    3. take advil to reduce the swelling and manage the pain
    4. do gentle stretching and muscle building exercises every single day.
    5. make sure you're getting enough calcium and vitamin D. Protein also helps rebuild tissue, so keep the levels up.

This is my regime. I don't know if what you have is the same, but it can't hurt to treat your hips nicely for a while. I've been out for about a week and a bi and am slowly starting to feel better. hopefully in a couple weeks i can start slowly building up my cardo again!

    good luck!

The best advice is go to a Doctor. There could be any one of hundreds of reasons for causing the pain.
