1 box chocolate cake mix
8 oz sour cream
1 pkg instant chocolate pudding
1 cup chocolate chips
4 eggs
3/4 cup oil
1 cup water

Mix all ingredients together. Pour into lightly greased 5qt crock pot, metal coffee can or Crock Pot Cake Bake pan. Cover.
Cook 3-4 hours on high or 6-8 hours on low.

** okay, so I know that substitutions can be made for a lot of this, but I'm not sure quantities - people who do this, what say you?

Could we swap out all (or at least half) of the sour cream for greek yogurt? 4 eggs for maybe 2 and 2 egg whites? 3/4 oil for applesauce (all or some)? Doing all of these would make SUCH a difference in calories!

  • You can swap the oil with unsweetened applesauce, it works really well, then use non fat greek yogurt instead of sour cream!

use apple sauce instead of the oil, use fat free sour cream, sugar free chocolate pudding and use bittersweet chocolate chips it should lower fat as well as calories

Can you swap ALL of the oil though? I always thought it was a ratio or something...

Here are the changes I would make...

1 box chocolate cake mix --> sugar free choc cake mix
8 oz sour cream--> fat free sour cream
1 pkg instant chocolate pudding--> sugar free choc pudding
1 cup chocolate chips-->dark choc chips
4 eggs--> egg whites, or imitation eggs
    3/4 cup oil-->unsweetened applesauce
    1 cup water

OR just mix one box of sugar free choc cake mix with 1 can of diet coke only and that would make it REAL low cal.
  • So it says that you can pour it straight into the crock pot- so you don't need a bake pan?
(which would be good because I don't have one!)
  • Yeah apparently you don't - you put it right in the crock pot and then scoop it out when it's done. It was on the cooks.com website (there's a link to it in the Crockpot thread in the Recipe section right now). Some people on that site said they could score it and flip it onto a plate buuuut I wasn't going to be making it for looks.

Where do you get sugar free cake mix?!
  • Hahaha, amen.
I looked it up online- it looks like you can get sugar free cake mix in the aisle where they have diabetic foods. I know one brand that my grandma and grandpa used is 50/50.
It also looks like Pillsbury makes a Devil's Food sugar-free cake mix.
  • So anyone know a genius low-cal icing/glaze? I can't do chocolate cake with no icing!

(I'm going to try our little revamped recipe tonight and report back!)
  • Eeeekkk....not sure! I didn't even think of that!!
What about chocolate flavored Cool Whip? Or eating it with Skinny Cow ice cream?
