lemon juice vs lemon zest

whats the difference? i have lemons (whole)...thats it. the recipe calls for 1tbsp lemon zest and 3 tbsp lemon juice.
can i make it work somehow?

The zest is the yellow part of the skin, and has a lot of flavor. It's best to use a zesting plane to get it off, which you do lightly so as not to get any of the white pith, which is bitter. You could use lemon juice, it won't be as strong of a flavor, but it would work.0

If you don't have a zester or micro planer, just use a regular peeler. Like the above poster said, don't get the white part-nasty bitter stuff. Once you taken the peel you need, juice the lemon.
The peel has was more oils for flavor than the juice. Lots of recipes call for both though.0
