... things you changed to become a healthier "you" ??? (besides using MFP of course)

Mine are :
1. I started eating healthier foods that contained lots of protein and fiber
2. started running :) like two months ago, but I am starting to love it!
3. figured out why I didn't make healthy decisions in the first place.. AND still learning how to change that around :)

so Let's hear it guys... Three best things you changed to become healthier ???

Replies

  • 1. Not snacking at night slash eating a later dinner so I'm not tempted to snack as much.
    2. Being conscious of carb intake. Those calories add up fast.
    3. Doing shorter, more intense workouts so I don't get bored as easily.

    1) Exercise. Never used to do any, now I do 60 mins 6 days a week (minimum)
    2) Gluten free diet (diagnosed coeliac this year)
    3) Reduced alcohol consumption

    stopped making excuses

stopped feeling like a "poor me", "nothing goes my way", "i'll never lose the weigh", "i only have to look at food and i put on weight" attitude

committed some serious time, money and energy into myself and my health.

the year i decided to dedicate to myself and my health was the best thing i've ever done. and no way i'm going back, it is all about me, and i can do things for myself whilst still doing all that is required for my family too.

    1. Biking to/from work (takes only 5 more minutes than driving and burns like 300 calories a day) and walking on my lunch.
    2. Planning meals and cooking food for the work week on Sundays.
    3. Cutting back (NOT cutting out) alcohol consumption.

    1. Not drinking my calories. Before, I wouldn't be surprised if I drank 500 calories or more a day. Cutting out milk and juice helped even though they were healthy.

    2. Got a job and became much more active

    3. Eating less, or at least healthier, fast food

    1. I gave up smoking. It was my crutch during my masters, and I smoked after every meal, with every cup of coffee, while socialising, with friends. Basically ALL DAY LONG. It was my favorite pastime. And I gave it up cold turkey, almost two months ago, and I have no cravings left. Although, I do miss the feeling of stress-relief and comfort (and satisfaction after meals) that it gave me!
Once I gave up smoking, I was PETRIFIED that I would put on more weight than I already had, so I joined MFP at 144lbs.

    2. I switched to semi-skimmed or 2% milk. I drink a lot of coffee, and a lot of milk in my coffee, and this made a big difference.

    3. I stopped viewing my body as something I wanted to become "skinnier" and now I realise that I want to not just be smaller, but to be more toned and to be fuelling my body with protein and fiber and all sorts of goodness

    1) Measuring everything! i am a strong believer in everything in moderation!! i was just eating 6ft3 boyfriend size portions...
    2) accepting that i have to do exercise to be able to eat what i want and have the body i like

cant think of a third, but them 2 were the main things!

    1. Found a strength training exercise I actually enjoy (pilates)
    2. Realized you can lose weight with just diet change alone, but exercise sure speeds up the loss!
    3. Paid more attention to my macro-nutrients. After I started tracking on MFP I was noticing I needed to up my protein intake

    1) surprisingly - my disability & learning to cope with it pushed me into researching how my body worked with my condition
    2) necessary physio turned into an enjoyment of exercise games as I got better control of co-ordination.
    3) studying diet and trying different things in a desperation to lose weight, turned into an enjoyment of experimenting with food and recipies, now I actually enjoy eating again.. not just cos I know I have to 'eat something today'
  • 1) I am a health major, and the more i learn, the more important i see how it is to TAKE CARE of each and every part of our bodies from the food we eat, the the chemicals we expose ourselves too.
2)CUT carbs & sugar.i didnt realize that being so young and not really overweight, i can still develop type 2 diabetes bc of high carb/sugar intake stressing my pancreas. i have to monitor my blood glucose every morning bc it is high. i dont even have diabetes in my family. crazy.
    3) every time i am about to eat i look at my plate and think "is that what a healthy relationship with food looks like?" like is it too much too less ?? it has helped.
  • congrats on quitting smoking. it will be 2 yrs smoke free for me in March. it gets easier and soooo much better not being dependant on something all the time.

    1) Got back into competitive Badminton.

    2) Got back into DDR

    3) Not really changing what i ate. If i did, I'd never have stuck with it this long. By purely moderating what i ate, it never felt like a diet, and so is much much easier to stick to.

<3 i thought the cutting carbs/sugar thing was interesting. i'd like to know more about that!!! cause i would really like to cut carbs and sugar but i am a runner now and need carbs :) haha
i like the idea of looking at your plate and thinking "is this something a healthy person would enjoy?" :):):)

these are not in order of importance

    1) cutting out soda/candy in large quantities on a near daily basis
    2) eating breakfast - not because I'm one of the believers in spreading out your meals to boost metabolism but because if I don't take that extra 10 minutes in the morning I'm STARVING by noon and will eat whatever I can stuff in my face.
    3) Getting over the idea of needing a starch/carb at every single meal. That was how my mom raised us and how I learned to make dinner, protein, two veg, and a starch/carb. Now I sometimes substitute the starch option with a third veggie or fruit, which often contains carbs but in much smaller amounts. Also, sort of in tandem with this, getting over the idea that the food I cook for dinner has to make my boyfriend happy. If he wants something else, he can cook it!
