BMI is STRICTLY a function of height and weight. There is no other way to obtain it. Unless your weight went up by 5%, your BMI can't go up by 5%. I'd question this machine, maybe it's not BMI it's measuring (how can it, unless it's a scale)?0

Do you mean your body fat percentage? Those things are notriously inaccurate.0
-
That's a body fat calculator, an electrical impedance one. They are NOT accurate and can depending greatly on how hydrated you are.0

If it makes you feel any better (not that it will, but I'll say it anyways)
<---- BMI says I'm between overweight and obese.
If you pardon my language, I think BMI can go @#%$#@ a @##@ lampshade tomorrow if it @#$#@ donkey @#$#@ walnut muffins with a @#$#@ bag of birdseed.
Know what I mean?
(Don't feel down, it's a whack chart to begin with).
EDIT: OH, you mean bodyfat%. Well those handheld things suck. Disregard and continue to make progress OP!0 -
Hi there,
I've been told by many physicians that BMI is not an accurate way to gauge weight loss, it needs to be used in conjunction with other measures. It may not have taken into account any muscle mass which you have gained, also it depends on what time of the day that you did it, how much water your body was retaining etc etc. There are a whole list of reasons that this could have happened, my advice would be to just ignore the whole BMI thing for a while and if your losing weight then keep up the good work0 -
yeah - please don't stress....really unreliable especially the hand held ones!! Hydration will have a huge effect.
deep breath, really0 -

I hate BMI. I hate it. Im trying to lose weight to get a breast reduction. I thought if I lost weight, and was fit and got to my weight I was at 16 (I was 180 but was uber fit, played volley ball, lifted weights, ran all the time, wore a size 7) I could get the breast reduction. I was informed by the surgeon today that at 280 my BMI was still in the obese range and that Id have to get down under 160 to qualify. Now the kicker is at 160, I looked sick, like I was a crackhead. Seriously. But apparently it is how much I am supposed to weigh at my HIGHEST. It doesnt take into account fitness level at all0

I tried one with a trainer too and I compared it to 2 other things (1with a scale) and the hand held one was off. Their digital scale was off too. I think they rig them up to make you panic and be tempted to buy sessions. Lol im kidding. But a lot of people use them and that also affects their accuracy. Don't worry about it.0

Thank you all! Now I feel better! The last time I was tested, I was weighing 283 and my BMI according to that bleep, it was 42%. Now I weight 268 and it said 47! I wonder if it was "fixed" so i get roped into geting personal trainer.
From now on,,, I will avoid it at all cost!0 -

^ Wasn't fixed, they are just horribly inaccurate.
Congrats on your progress so far, keep it up!0 -
Those things are horribly inaccurate. The best way to figure is pay to use a bod pod or measurements, or fat calipers. As a trainer we were told never to use those. I have never worked at a gym that forces training on people though.0

Wow, a trainer among us and you are so honest! The gym I belongs to do try their damnest to get people to sign up. At 40 dollars per 30 minutes session, FORGET IT !
What they do,, they offer FREE assessment, and then make you do stuffs that was WAY over your abitlity to handle.. According to a book I read, this is common practice to make customers think they are out of shape and need PT to get back on track. No wonder why I was so mad at the PT when I told him several times,, I CAN'T HANDLE THE 10 POUNDS DUMBELL! did he listen? no and I got black/blue arm the next day.
I am curious,, why werre you told to never use the calipers, whatever that is?0 -
Skinfold calipers used by someone who is experienced is the best way to measure body fat. If they use the 7 site test. My person is a Wellness nurse who told me that she could guarantee being within 2%. She's been doing it for 20 years.0
