I am really interested in buying an elliptical but want to start with a lower priced one at first to really see how often I really use it. Can anyone give me some suggestions and prices please.

I've tried a bunch of different ones -- and unfortunately, the only one I actually like costs about $8,000 so I will keep using it at the gym0

I lost my first 30 lbs on a cheap walmart elliptical. $130.00.0

If there is a craigslist for your area, check there. I went that route with my treadmill (cheap and used to make sure I was committed before spending serious cash), and I'm pretty gosh darn happy with it. Some day I'll get a better one, but for now it's functional, and if I want to be spoiled I use the ones at the gym
My favorite elliptical at the gym is the precor ones. Soooo amazing, but they aren't cheap at all.0 -

Same here. If I had 12k sitting around, I would own my very own Precor Elliptical0 -
Check your local paper classifieds and Craigslist. I would opt for a used one to "test it out" and if you find yourself using it often, then research new ones and shell out a little more money.... or who knows, you may love the used one you find and just keep it. I got mine off Craigslist. It was $2500 new and I got it for $150. It's a little outdated but it does the job. It's big and heavy, which I like though. I don't want a dinky wobbly one that I'm afraid I will break if I go too fast or something.0

I have bought a couple. The cheap walmart model I got broke 3 times, I made sure to keep my receipt and had no problems exchanging it, or getting my $ back when I couldn't handle the breaking anymore! I ended up buying a "cheap" one at a sporting goods store and still have it, no problems with it at all. So I guess I am suggesting getting a higher "priced" one, which hopefully means better quality!
As far as price, I'm pretty sure it was in the $300 to $400 range.0 -
I have a NordicTrack E7.1 and I love it! I use it at least an hour a day and have had it since February 2011. It definitely isn't the same as a gym elliptical but for $750 it is well worth the money.0

I owned a high level one (was about $1500 I think) and there is a HUGE difference between working on a cheap one and working on a good one. Way more so than getting a treadmill or other types of machines. If you "cheap out" when buying an elliptical, you are much less likely to use it and less likely to get a decent workout from it. My point being that I would say NOT to buy one unless you can afford a good one - ie a Precor. I would recommend just investing in the gym membership rather than buying a cheaper one for home. Or get a treadmill, if you're looking for a cheaper piece of equipment for home, like if you live in a snowy winter area and don't think you'll make it to the gym much.
Precor 5XX series are the ones you'd want to get, and they're not cheap at all.0 -
I would say that a gym membership is the way to go. If you buy an elliptical you can only do the elliptical, whereas gyms offer variety. If you burn out on the elliptical you can switch it up at the gym and move to treadmills or stationary bikes, and you know what they say, "variety is the spice of life!"0

Out of curiosity I looked up the price for the ones at my gym..... $7000!!!! Whew. If I was rich I would have one... it's awesome.

thanks everyone. I might look at the gym membership idea, I used to belong to a gym years ago but i lived over an hour away from the closest one and now i am only 5 minutes away so I think it will be used more than before.0

I bought a NordicTrack one from Sears for about $600. Not gym quality, but it does the job and I LOVE it! I didn't need a fancy one with a tv or anything because I use it in my living room anyway.0

Oh, I forgot, I did break a few of these every 6 months or so, but I returned them everytime and finally the last one they replaced has lasted.0 -
FYI the one I love at the gym is Precor AMT (adaptive motion trainer) and it's amazing.... and 8,000$ lol)

Since I am also addicted to Zumba it's worth it for me to pay a gym membership -- I can do zumba 14x a week if I want and use all the equipment which is state of the art. Plus, all the people at zumba keep me accountable if I don't show up.0 -
Look at local thrift shops, they usually have a bunch of used exercise gear for cheap. That way you can try it out with little risk and if you get lucky you could even get a good deal on a really nice one.0
