I spend alot less on food when I am eating healthy than when I am eating crap.

A starbucks costs me £2.50, I spend less than that on food a day.

The cost of my exercise is £16 a month, for gym, swim and classes at about 11 different sports centres.

    Dieting is not expensive.
  • People will always find an excuse when they aren't truly committed to accomplishing a task. Expense, time, effort, fatigue....whatever. We all just have to learn to push through them because the end result is SO worth the pain, effort and sacrifice it takes to get there.

It's funny that most people, myself included (at one time), would think nothing of plunking their family down at a local steak house and pay 70 dollars and not blink an eye but go to the grocery and spend the same and you think you're getting robbed! Now , we usually take a trip to Sam's Club buy a whole Beef Tenderloin for 70 and eat top notch steak dinners for a couple of weeks instead of once, lol. I think saying eating healthy is expensive is an excuse. Yes, of course it is more expensive if you buy all organic foods or grass fed only beef but anyone can eat healthy even on a budget. Two bags of Doritos are $7.00, hmm, I could buy some apples, carrots, lettuce and bananas (all of which I consider basic items) for less than the chips! A container of stew beef costs less than 7 and we can eat off of that for a couple of days. I really could go on and on but I won't :)

Dieting is absolutely NOT expensive. It can be if you buy diet food, get a gym membership, buy gym clothes and equipment. But I learned on a trip last month all you need to do is shop carefully at the grocery store and walk 60-70 minutes a day. Groceries are less expensive (because you are eating less) and walking is free, although you do wear your shoes out faster. I lost 1.5/week. SO stop making excuses.

Totally agreed. I believe it is more expensive if you eat junk as junk food make your sugar goes fast pretty fast which makes you feel full, but as fast as the sugar level goes up it goes back down to so you feel hungry again which means you can eat another 500-600 or 1000 calorie meal so at the end of the day probably we have at least 3000 calorie of junk... that's sad :(((
Just by cooking healthy you could eat 200-400 calorie meals with vitamins, mineral. I am wondering what others think when they eat junk...

Exactly, there are so many free way to do exercise and eat healthier is not only cheaper, because you are eating less, but while paying for a hamburger 4-5$ from the same money you can buy nearly 5lbs of vegetable/fruit at Foodmart or Grocery Outlet :))

It depends on what you've changed. I used to spend hardly anything on food, I probably spend almost twice as much now, and I'm really watching what I spend - it would be more, if I was as relaxed as I want. I used to buy alot of cheap frozen meals, and dried foods such as pasta (cheap) and would just overeat in general. I never bought much meat or fresh fruit/veg. Now I buy alot of meat and fresh veg which equals expense.

Alot of people who are overweight though, get takeaways etc, it's ALOT cheaper to cook your meals from scratch than it is to get someone else to do it for you. You also don't have to get fresh stuff for it to be healthy. Frozen veg is just as good. Buy bulk offers on meat and freeze it. If someone says they can't diet/lose weight because of money, "most" of the time they are making excuses as in my opinion there is always a way to eat healthier without spending loads, even if it may not be the absolute best way, or the way you really want to live you can still improve on where you are now.
There is lots of exercise that is free too! :)

Exactly, there are always better and worst, but the choice is always in our hand not in our wallet :P I rather spend money on fresh food or frozen depends what I am making as a meal, but there are also beets cans or peas that I buy sometimes which are already better source of food than a fast or junk food.

just wearing the shoes out faster - thats all for me
  • I find buying Walmart brand frozen veggies are a great price. Nothing is added to them. For a small bag I pay around $1 and it last for awhile instead of buying fresh. I also have a store in my area called bilo that always runs a buy one get one free sale on chicken breast that's a great price!

My food bill was higher when I was dieting than before because I ate less pasta and rice as fillers. Pasta and rice is sooooo cheap and veggies are not. My family lived off fat filled mince because my meat cost me 30 dollars for a fortnight instead of it being much higher, leaner meet is much more expensive.

You are comparing someone with a terrible diet to a good diet NOT someone who is eating a somewhat good diet but proportions of things being out.

skim milk is more expensive, wholemeal is more expensive ect ect.

But even with it costing more there is no way you can't manage the somewhat extra costs of healthy food. What most people don't like is the preparation that goes into said food.

I think most people who consider eating healthy to be expensive think in terms of buying healthy food items ***in addition to*** the food they currently buy. They don't consider cutting out the unhealthy food as an option. Also, eating healthy typically entails extra food preparation, and since that can be a chore (or, it is for me anyway), it is often factored into the cost, even if it isn't monetary in that case.

    EXACTLY!
  • Eep, I am going to be that person who disagrees.

So far dieting and buying healthier foods has been more expensive for me. The grocery store I shop at has fuel point rewards when you buy groceries. One dollar equals one fuel point. When you get 100 fuel points you get 10 cents off gas. *blah blah useless stuff* ha. But before I started buying fruits and veggies and other healthy options I would MAYBE get to 60 points in a month. Now I am almost at 80 points and the month isn't even over yet. So, I have some hard evidence (aside from my higher grocery bill) that it's more expensive for me to diet.

I know before I met my fiance and was a struggling single mom... all we could afford was carbs it seemed potatoes, bread pasta etc... IF THAT... we had eggs that was about the healthies thing and from time to time some frozen veggies... eating carbs of course we would not stay full very long, because of course cause they turn to sugar in your system and make you hungry again sooner...but a bag of rice or a loaf of bread go further than a small bag of carrots
    .
we got vegetables every second week from our local food bank, but not much... it wasn't we were out eating steak dinners or pigging out on chips, chocolate etc...we could not afford that... I simply did not have the money to buy fruits, vegetables, lean meats and carbs gave me more bang for my buck so to say...sometimes my son would eat and I would not...

I realize NOW that I am eating healthy that yes I am fuller longer...and am glad I had the oppertunity to have a healthier lifestyle... dieting no isn't really expensive but when you are living in a deficit already and have 20$ a week for groceries... you have to buy what you can... THANK god things have changed... anyway we can't go back only move on... life has gotten 110% better...

I am more than happy to help some good friends out now by buying them vegetables and fruits when I can... to make sure they get the nutrition they need...

ok that barely made sense... that's my 2 cents lol

Sorry to disagree with you, but there are many options to buy healthier foods actually ingredients like some of us said, Walmart, Food Mart, Food Max, Safe way, Grocery outlet, even at dollar tree you can find some useful thing. It is all come to down how you calculate your money and what you put your mind into. I am pretty sure that there are options everywhere just have to find it!

I wouldn'y say dieting is expensive. Look at it this way. At Mcdonlads you buy One Burger thats like $6.00 which has all this grease, one leaf of lettuce and one tomato slice. That burger is like 600cals. I think its better to go to the market spend money on lean meats & veggies. The you make a grilled Turkey burger at home with all the works & it'll only be 400 cals still have stuff left over for other things and still have money in your pocket as oppose to tomorrow having to spend another $6.00 bucks on some burger thatll just make you feel like crap.

Yup I agree. You dont always have to get the name brand stuff either. It all depends to me people say get the shady brooke farms turkey meat the rest is fake blah blah blah. Whatever, its all the same. Meat is meat. That turkey meat with no name brand on it and is 3 bucks less then shady brooke taste just the same & believe me Ive tasted both. Thats just my opinion.

I have found that buying fresh produce can be quite expencive, especially in the winter time, but I look at it as a good investment. I am investing in myself. Either I pay now, and live a healthy lifestyle, ( a little at a time) OR, I pay later, with hospital bills. My obesity increases my chances of diabetes mellitis, heart disease, etc... I would rather pay now, and try to avoid those painful, and expencive to control diseases.(I used those 2 diseases as examples, because I have a family history of these) There are of course many other diseases/problems that my obesity could increase my likelyhood to get.
I say, eating healthy is worth the cost, and effort for me. :)
  • I do not think that it is expensive to diet. Now that they have stores like Aldi's you can even buy fresh produce and it is still just the same as you would get at an expensive chain supermarket. One can still eat regular food and still diet if it is consumed in moderation. I buy packaged rice and noodle mixes and I just measure what goes on my plate.

I think it's expensive if you buy into the sheeple train of "I need to buy Supplement X, combine it with Pill Y, AND multiply it by excersise equipment Z."

Otherwise, its just about discipline and willpower to choose healthier foods, keep track of what is going into your body, and the willingness to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

I don't know how you can actually disagree with me on what I spend. haha. I am the one buying the stuff. I buy the cheaper things. Compared to what I was buying before and what I am buying now, I am spending more on eating healthy. I am not shopping at some fancy supermarket and I don't buy organic. I mean, if I have to go to the dollar store to find cheaper food than what I was spending before, or I have to really try and budget to make my bills smaller... then eating healthier really isn't cheaper. I think it's great if it works out for a lot of others where they are spending less and eating healthy is cheaper... it's just for me personally it has not been cheaper.
