Anyone used Yaktraz for winter running? Can you tell me a little bit about how and if they work? I'm thinking about getting a set.

My DH uses them all winter long. Hates the dreadmill and runs outside all winter unless it is sleeting. They kind of bungee to your shoes and have springy prongs on the bottom that provide grip. Haven't used them myself, so that's all I've got....

I've used them on my running shoes to run in snow.
Last winter we got about 6 inches or so and I was dying to run. lol I just slipped them over the shoes and out the door I went. They feel a little weird at first and I probably wouldn't have gone for a super long run in them unless I had to. I didnt have any issues with them slipping off my shoes or with them not providing traction in the snow. I cannot speak for how they work on ice though. I think that would be the bigger test!

Not sure what you are talking about, but I am going to try running in snow shoes this winter. They actually have snow shoe races that are exteremly competitive!

I asked a friend about it who has run in the winters here in Michigan, and she said she bought a pair, wore them out to run, lost one of the two while running, and never used them again. She runs without them all winter. It gets pretty dreadful where we're at (near the lake shore) with snow and ice, so if she can run 7-9 miles without them, I figure I won't need them for my little 3-4 mile jaunts, either. :)

Love 'em. You just have to make sure they're secure and you won't lose them. I ran them through the big east coast "snowmageddon" back in early 2010 and they work great.

Yes, they're great. Just be careful on non-snowy surfaces - they're slippery.

Love my yaktrax! Great on hard packed snow and ice.

I use Yaktrax when it's compacted snow or icy, when it's fresh snow I tend to just go out without them.

My husband has another kind, which are more like little picks on the bottom. I'd definitely get some that fasten over the top of the shoe so you don't lose them in a snow bank!

Thank you so much for the great feedback! I live in upstate NY and our winters are pretty harsh. I hate running on the treadmill and would like an alternative, if possible!
  • I would recommend Stabilicer Sports ice cleats by 32north. The Sports are lightweight, durable and have replaceable cleats for long life. Great quality, made in Maine. The Sports are designed for runners and will last you a long time. A great value and come in several colors.
