Ideal Weight?

Hi Everyone! :)

How many of you think that you know what your ideal weight is?

My BMI says I should be between 104 & 141 (I haven't been 140 since middle school)!!! I'm a curvy girl--always have been--5' 3" and fairly muscular. I had my ideal weight calculated by the Dukan Diet site and they said I should be about 161, which seams much more reasonable to me.

I have a long way to go, but it's a much more realistic goal for me, I think. It was such a relief to see!!

How about you? What kind of "ideal weight" are you aiming for? How's your journey going?

Best of luck to all of you!!

You need to get your bodyfat tested and see where you want to maintain (ie.. 20%, 17%, 25%). Then see where your weight would fall. BMI sucks

5'3 and curvy I'd say 140-155lbs myself but thats just me.. Personally I say lose till you feel good with where you are at. Pick a comfy starting goal weight and then when yu get there if you'd like less hey new goal no biggie :) and yeah body fat is also a good indication but always best if your personal apraisal is the best :)

I'm 5' 1.5" and have a very small frame. At my fittest a couple years ago I was 105 and super healthy. It totally just depends on your body type.
  • BMI kind of sucks. Based on pictures of me now and last year I know what twenty five pounds looks like coming off my body, so if I were to estimate, I'd say my ideal weight is 135-140, which is another 20-24 lbs for me. I can and will do it , no more slack =)

I am 6'1 I would like to way 190-200lbs I have the same issue fairly curvy and athletic. My BMI says 180 -185 I do not want to be to small. My journey is going fairly well so far I am down to 215 currently so hopefully I will be there soon. I would love to just have a toned body.

Many people are in the same situation as you are. I think most people know when they are at their ideal weight--firm stomach, firm legs and arms and a general sense of well-being. If you look in the mirror and don't see any flab, I think it's safe to say that you have arrived at your ideal weight, regardless of what the BMI says.

Ditto this. Lose till YOU feel good...even if you're not where the BMI scale says you should be. I personally feel BMI should not be the main scale for a "perfect/ideal" weight.

I am currenty babysitting a 2 year old...and will most likely quit keeping him sometime after the 1st of the year (too much drama within his family, among other things)...and at that point in time, I will go have my body fat tested/read and continue my fitness/dieting from there. :D

Based on my current height (5'6) and info at this website (http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/),: For your height, a normal weight range would be from 115 to 154 pounds. 115 is really pushing it to the thin side. So, I'm going to shoot for 150-175. :D

It depends not only on your weight but also if you have a heavy bone weight. I am 5'3 and the ideal weight for me wud be between 47 to 53 kgs but trust me that is not possible with my bone weight. I feel good at 60 kgs too. (years and years ago :p)

You can see my pic - i am not sure if you would agree that i am 66lbs overweight if I go by the ideal weight concept.

Still, hit it till you feel good about yourself.

I still haven't found my ideal weight yet, I believe I am 5 feet 3 inches and I've always been quite curvy as well (1,63 cm)

I'm inside the category of Ideal according to BMI, but I still look very bulky, so I guess instead of being nearer overweight, I should be nearer underweight to reach my ideal. I was slim until I got to 14, so I know I can look slimmer than that and look good without looking unhealthy. The thing is this BMI doesn't really count with your bone structure at all. My bones are quite heavy by themselves. I remember once while I was still slim and fit, and a friend of us who was quite a bit too curvy reaching the term "fat" said that she weight at least 10 kilos less than myself!! And believe me for that weight you'll imagine someone slim and slender! so nevermind the BMI, you'll know it's ideal when you feel comfortable in your clothes and proud of your achievement. As long as you don't develop an eating disorder, you should know when that moment arrives :D

Totally agree- I'm also 5' 3. To have a BMI of 25 I need to be around the 140 mark. I got down to that once (many moons ago!) and looked well but definitely think that's as small as I should be. The Dukan site said 135 which is fair enough but if i wanted to be in the middle of the "healthy range" for my BMI I'd be looking at something between 125 and 130, I know I'd look horrendous that small.

Why do people still use BMI? Especially when they've gone down to close to their goal weight? Has anyone verified their bodyfat to make sure they are in a reasonable range?

You all make excellent points. I just thought that it was interesting how the "standard" for measuring a healthy weight (BMI) seems to be everyone's enemy!!!

I think it's great that we're all looking to feel healthy and fit rather than trying to fit into some nonsensical, computer-generated weight range.

Kuddos to all of you and your journeys. I know I've been struggling with mine, but it will be well worth it when I look in the mirror and see a healthy, strong, confident woman.

Best of luck to everyone!! :)

Right. Good points. Fat%, desired weight, how you want to look etc.. are all factors. No one should use just one to determine what your goals are. If your goal sets you at 25%, then so be it. At least one won't be running into a brick wall trying to get down to a weight that puts them at 5-10%.
