So I went shopping yesterday for a new pair of pants and some work shirts. Shirts fit fine - bought all smalls (stretchy, probably a medium in most things), but I still ran into the dreaded problem for many women, pants.

I'm almost 130 lbs, 5'1. Maybe a little "chunky" by some people's standards, but in no way heavy. Yet it seems that because of how I'm built, there's almost no possible way for me to fit into a straight "skinny" jean, even if the pants are larger than my usual size. I know that I should be thrilled with the progress I've made and how I feel, but it's so depressing to look at myself and realize that even if I got to my goal weight, or say I lost another 15-20 lbs, I could not and would not fit into a "small" pair of pants. My legs are literally double the distance around on the thighs and calves as many of these smaller sizes were.

So is it simply a matter of accepting that I will never fit into the pants I see myself in? I realize that spot-training is a myth, so I don't feel like losing a few more pounds would come off of my legs at all (or at least it doesn't seem that way so far).

Any tips? Words from people who've gone through the same thing?

there is a difference between straight leg and skinny leg- try to look for straight leg jeans, then if you want the skinny look, you could have them taken in.

and try not to buy into all the hype- skinny jeans aren't the be all and end all of fashion.

    good luck!

Well, You do need to accept that you may never have model legs.. Your genes are your genes but accept what you have, dress in a way that fits you best and flaunt what you have. Work what ya got honey :) You have done well and should be happy with yourself. Don't let a certain style get you down. Find what works with, not against you :)

I feel you, I think...I'm 5'2, 138-140lbs, and I'm usually set with a size 8 on pants...but not really. Pants that fit my thighs and hips leave inches left over at the waist. Pants that would probably fit my waist don't even fit up over my hips.

Are you worried because you don't fit into size "small" pants, or are you worried about the fit of pants in general? If you're stressing because your measurements on top and bottom don't match, then it's not a fair fight. Some people will never fit into smaller-size pants, but that doesn't mean you can't look amazing in medium-size pants. In H&M clothes, I wear a 4-6 (S/M) on top and an 8-10 (M/L) on the bottom, and I am confident enough to say that this still looks fantastic on me, even though the numbers are different.

I wished I was 6'2 (so I could say I had a chance to play in the NFL) but I've accepted because of my genes that that won't happen. Learn to like yourself unconditionally.

Even when i was smaller i had the same problem... I am odd shaped and find that my thighs can't fit into the pants... you can get alterations but i usually buy the jeans that have the stretch factor! Sometimes they are more expensive but they flatter me better and accomodate my giant thighs while still fitting my waist... and besides even if you cant they are not all that anyway... i usually just wear them with my knee high boots.

    BESt of luck!

I would encourage you to not play the "genetics" card until you've met your weight-loss goals, improved your cardio and muscle attributes, and have made it to a point where improved fitness gets tougher to achieve (low body fat and nice muscle tone). I've seen lots of cases of people who went from obese down to competition fitness models. Yes, we all have limits and differences, but we don't know what they truly are until we've put a heck of a lot of time in training.

Skinny jeans are hideous on 90% of the population.

I would love to be the same weight as you. I still wouldn't try on skinny jeans though. I wouldn't be caught dead in them (or worse, trying to fit into them).

The clothing industry has sick and twisted ideas of beauty. Don't be afraid to get your clothes altered or make your own to fit your body. That's what I end up doing about half the time. It's not a picnic being short, so I end up hemming most of my pants.
