If it's really low calorie I wouldn't think it'd be very good, but you can get protein shakes that are higher calorie/carb so for me personally I think they'll be more suitable for a replacement
If yours is low and you don't have long to eat you could always grab something else quick as well, a slice of toast, a handful of nuts, piece of fruit?0 -
okay thanks its got only 16 carbs but 234 calories?0
-
No matter what food is always better than suppliments, but if your crunched on time then might aswell, just make sure it's an isolate or a high quality protein0
-
If it holds you over until you can eat again, yes it's fine. You can break up your calories and nutrients however you want.0

is that from 1 serving? or 2?0 -
Need some slow burning carbs too.. I recommend pure protein bars cuz I'm using them right now for post workouts.. 200 calories, 60 from fat, 20 protein, and 25 slow burning carb, only 2 g of sugars and tastes great0

What is a good high quality protein?0

What is a good high quality protein?
What i use is body fortress whey isolate protein which you can get at any walmart. It's a very good protein and only cost about 15 dollars. The way you can usually tell if it's good, is if you mix it and it's not very clumpy and dissolves easily.(if your worried about your cholesterol then stick with isolate)
Also most the things that bodyfortress comes out with tastes pretty good.0 -
I thought I had a short lunch (1/2)hr. I'd say it's good for a midmorning/midafternoon snack supplement. Nothing replaces real food.
You think you can add some wheat toast with peanut butter to that? It would turn your shake into part of an actual meal.0 -
That sounds like quite a lot of calories for two scoops of protein powder? I'm guess it must be flavoured and have a fair amount of sugar in it then?
I've just started using protein powder. I'm using Nature's Way natural instant protein powder which was the cheapest one that i found at woolworths and is made of soy protein isolate - so it's a quality protein (although when i'm through with this one i think i'll look for a whey isolate especially since i suspect this one might not be GMO free).
It has 117 calories in 2 scoops.
It doesn't have any flavour (although it tastes a little like soy milk).
I have it for breakfast mixed in with skim milk, yoghurt, chia seeds and whatever fruit i want (banana, mango, berries etc). That's my breakfast and it has been keeping me full for ages. And it's great as i don't have much time for breakfast so put it in a milkshake cup and drink it on my drive to work.
Tonight i'm going out for dinner with friends and won't want to be tempted to eat (well almost anything) at the place we are going to. They don't really even have any healthy salads there. So i think i'll make up a protein smoothie before hand, and then i'll be full and just have a brucetta and some soda water or something so i don't look like an idiot not having anything. I'm trying to eat my main meal at lunch these days anyway.
So i reckon give it a go for work... but make sure you don't have much sugar the rest of the day and make sure you get lot of vitamins and minerals from fresh fruit and veg whole grains and lean meats for your other meals. And maybe once you've run out of this tin, try some other brands and give them a go.
nuts are a good quick, nutritious snack too.
But what kind of job only gives you 10 mins for lunch?! That is crazy mean. Is it because you're on a short shift? If so then maybe eat before and after instead even if it is weird times?0 -
Ah sorry, just saw it didn't have that much sugar. Wonder where all the calories are coming from then? Maybe it just has more protein that my powder...?
What brand is it? i'm curious now.0 -
Its interesting about the cholesterol because I didn't realise protein shakes could have so much cholesterol. I have high cholesterol and it runs in my fathers side of the family.
I have used Natures Way Vanilla protein powder over here in Australia mixed with water, but I did notice it doesn't mix terribly well and can settle at the bottom of my shaker bottle.
Its a soy based powder, so is there something better for me that I can get here in Aus? Or even buy over the net and get it sent here, thats an option too
cheers0 -
I'm liking the Pure Protein Bars too. I eat half as a serving. Bought them at Costco. Mostly for between meal snacks for me.0

Yes you're right it does't mix well - so i use a blender.
This is the one i'm going to try once i've run out of Nature's Way:
Professional Whey
http://professionalwhey.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=61
It's the cheapest Whey isolate i can find thus far on the internet in Australia (1 kg is $34.50). They also sell through ebay where i think it is $40 with free postage or something.
Does anyone know of a cheaper Whey isolate from an Australian company? The soy stuff is definitely cheaper.0 -

Listening to a recent podcast by Jillian Michaels she advises to STAY AWAY from soy and soy-based products if possible. Apparently soy is very dangerous to our bodies and how it process it. I'm just sayin'
Whey protein is the best type of protein (also recommended by Jillian) which is what I take.
Why do you get such a short lunch-break? Hardly a break at all I say! It was also mentioned that real food is the best choice and I agree totally. Stick to protein with every meal (even some boiled egg whites) and eat as much veges and 2 pieces of fruit per day (can you munch on fruit or veges while you work perhaps)?

Sure - as long as you are getting the rest of your calories and nutrition at other times of the day you'll be fine.
And as long as it fills you up. You could always add something quick to eat like a peanut butter sandwich or muesli bar if you feel better with something more solid in your stomach.0 -

I saw an ad on one of the newspaper sites, might have been for the paper in adelaide, adelaidenow.com.au, there was an ad for venom whey protein powder, think it was about $75 delivered for 2.5kg or something. Was thinking about it but don't know much about venom powder, any reports??
Another site I have used and they do reviews is called aminoz.com.au, I have used them before and they seem legit. I was also looking at their "dymatize" protein powder, hope I spelt it right.
Anyone tried that one? Its supposed to be natural, as powders go anyway.0 -
Currently, my number 2 meal is a shake. I make them myself using protein powder, oats and peanut butter for fat. Sometimes I'll use milk, sometimes water. They can be anywhere from 120 to 1000 calories in a cup. Usually I would prefer to chew my meals but because I'm in class, it's easier to drink something vice disrupting others.0

If that's all you can have then I think it is good because at least you are having something.
I sometimes have an isowhey shake because I just don't get lunch breaks ever and I work 40-50 hrs a week, so I figure if I can chug one of these down it a) gives me some nourishment and b) I don't go looking for the wrong type of munchies because I'm content0 -
I have no answer to your question, but I'm going to check out the labels on the Up & Go and Sustagen next time I'm in the supermarket!0

I love having them in a pinch. As long as they don't become an everyday meal, you should be okay. It really depends on your calorie count and if you are trying to lose weight or gain muscle mass, too. A lot of people have made great suggestions about trying to mix it with peanut butter toast or a muffin. I find, no matter how many grams of protein, I am still hungry after the shakes. My brain can't shake the fact that it is a drink - and should have some food with it.0

ah yes, you're right. I wasn't counting what it was mixed with. I mix mine with different things on different days too so i rather use just the powder value and then add whatever.
well i hope it got you through your work shift!0
