Healthy Eating/Cooking with Kids

For those with kids: do they eat the same foods you do? Are they involved in cooking? If yes (to either) what tips/tricks have worked for your family to encourage healthy eating?
Not really needing advice, just curious, and being lazy. I have a paper due in a few weeks and for some reason, my teacher has been obsessed with us writing about food this month. I'm bored with this topic, and looking for some ideas to spark creativity again.

We cook and eat together. For one thing, what they cooked themselves (or picked from the garden, washed and cut), they will WANT to eat and enjoy. I started mine out helping in the kitchen when they were toddlers, mostly to keep them where I could see them and keep the mess contained lol. It was the best thing I could have done, though. They have a healthy concept of nutritional value and non-nutritious foods and understand why junk food is "occasional treat only" stuff, and they are willing to try just about anything, so eat a very good variety of foods.0

For us is really was as simple as... I cook, this is the food we are eating, let's eat.
Of course I try to make things that the kids will like as often as possible. However for new foods, we have a "Three Bite Rule"... you must eat three bites with no bad attitudes, no commentary, just eat. After the three bites, then you can say what you liked or disliked about it; flavor, texture, etc. From there I can tweak foods to fit our family's needs and likes.0 -
I have been told by others that "your kids eat like adults."
I never thought of it like that but they really do.
They always have - even when they were smaller.
They have varied tastes and will lean toward the healthy option over the unhealthy option EVERY time.
They are inspirational really.
( an example : 2 wks ago my daughter & I went to seminar and they provided cookies & soda for a snack b/c lunch was going to be delivered later. The cans of soda were in a large cooler covered in ice. My daughter rooted around in the ice for a bit and then asked them if they had any bottled water. They looked at her like she was crazy for not wanting the soda. I also asked for bottled water. They had someone go out and pick up a case and put it on ice for us. Turns out we saw many other ppl start to pick up the bottled water as well once it was there as an option ).
I cook and they eat...plain and simple.
I keep healthy things made up & available all the time ( natural trail mix, whole wheat pretzels, cottage cheese, milk ( not flavored ), fresh fruit in a bowl on the table, a green salad & fruit salad for meals )...
They love to help cook and they are old enough now to help with clean up too.
Set a good example and the kids will follow...0 -
I have 4 kids, aged 1-10 and yes, they all eat what the whole family eats. They all have different tastes of course so different ones like different meals. But I've found that kids often gravitate toward the healthy food if it is offered. I also sometimes give options, like they can have either a fruit or veggie but they must eat one--one child will eat just about any veggie you put in front of her and the other will eat any fruit. My oldest has always liked mushrooms, olives and tomatoes. I never liked mushrooms much but since she did, I started putting them in a lot of food to get her to eat, which worked with her. I think the key is giving it to them. And also showing them that you as a parent are willing to try new things and new ways of cooking the usuals. Their tastes will change through the years but if they are hungry and it is on their plate, they will generally eat it. My oldest never ate any kind of bread--no pizza, no pb&j. She would try it occasionally but just never liked it. I didn't push it, because it's bread, but all of a sudden she started eating it and now she enjoys it as long as it is a good bread. She also never liked salad but we always made her eat one small piece of lettuce. She liked everything on the salad except the lettuce. This summer all of a sudden at dinner one night, she ate 3 helpings of a caesar salad. Apparently she just needed to find a dressing she liked. Since we've been going to a local produce market frequently also, they've been enjoying trying new things and have eaten more veggies. My kids have all always been good eaters and I really do attribute it to the fact that I don't make something different for them and they have the opportunity to try new things. As to whether they are involved with cooking—sometimes. They would like to do more but I like to cook and they get in my way. I should be more patient but they drive me nuts when they are in there. A lot of times they stand on a stool and watch. But when they do help me cook, they definitely are more interested in eating the meal. Sorry this is kind of rambling, but well that's how I am0

I have begun making salads and strategically placing them between my daughter and I while we eat. This has got her tempted and she has started digging into it as well.:) . I also started making myself an egg, spinach, cilantro, green pepper ,cheese etc breakfast. She wanted to taste some of mine and so this afternoon she asked me to make her the same for lunch. I was busy telling her Dad how she ate spinach today and she went " I did , when ".LOL. SHe enjoyed it so that she never realized she ate more than one veggie disguised and she polished off half of my egg while I was busy on the phone with someone;).
I am a very impatient person so hate anyone around me in the kitchen but because I wanted my 13 year old to learn to bake I got her to start throwing in the ingredients into the food processor in order to get her interested and afterwards complimented her on her lovely cake in front of the visitors. Made her feel real proud .0 -

Exactly. I will never understand why people make different food, usually all junk stuff, for their kids. If you won't eat it cause it is full of crap, why serve it to your kids?0
