Wii Workouts.

I'm looking into getting a Wii, and was wondering how effective the workouts are. I wouldn't use it to replace my usual routine, just add to it.
But I'm a little stand-offish about the whole thing! It seems too enjoyable to be effective!
So I'm wondering if anyone out there can tell what the workouts are like. Do you have to do hours and hours on the Wii to get a decent calorie burn?
And for the fact of the matter I don't even know what any of the workouts are! What kind of things do you?

Anyone that has had experience with the wii workouts, I'd love to hear what you have to say!

you can burn a decent amount of calories on EA Active 2, it comes with a HRM and bands, and its fun

i'd rather get an xbox or a ps3 tho :)
  • I think the Wii is a good way to exercise and have fun, however you do have to spend quite alot of time on it to burn a good amount of calories, and it does everything by weight. I found that when it weighed me it was between 3 and 7 pounds out quite often. And it doesn't like extra weight so you can't use any weights while you're on it.

It is good though if you're just adding it. You'll be doing your normal exercise and this is better than sitting on your bum watching T.V.

Why not see if someone you know has one? You coul borrow it and try it out for a few days.

Another vote for EA Sports Active 2. They work you pretty hard! Lots of squats, lunges, pushups, jumping rope, etc. I like wii fit too...I wasn't aware of how I have been favoring my left leg my entire life and just how off my balance was until I got it. I like the yoga on the wii fit for when my muscles are sore from EA sports active 2.

The wii fit is what got me started with the exercise. I still use it now sometimes. I find I can burn around 400 cals in an hour which isn't much compared to the gym. The games are quite fun but can get a bit boring after a while.
I've heard the kinnect is great for exercise games
  • I did a few rounds of some skateboarding game on a friend's wii and was out of breath by the end of it.

There are entries in the exercise database for wii exercises, check out how many minutes you would have to do to urn your desired calories.

I have been doing 30mins free run on it for the.last few days (jogging on the spot) and it does get you tired and sweaty! That's about 214 cals depending on how hard you push.

I love it, it also let's you watch another channel while doing the free run so you can watch your favourite programme or movie while your doing it :)
  • You could always see if your local video rental store has the wii for rent to see how you like it.

I got mine because I though it would be a good workout. As far as compared to sitting on your butt playing games it's more exercise. Unfortunately, since we got another video game system, the wii sits unused except for using the wii fit scale and for Netflix. There was just not enough variety to hold our interest in it for long to use it as a fitness tool. I'd rather go for a short run and the kids would rather play something with better graphics and game play.

Really? I think I missed something (or forgot it.) What is free run?

Jogging on the spot, it might only be on the plus not sure, but at the start it says you can turn over to another channel and it will guide you through the speaker on the remote. You put the remote in your pocket and just jog on the spot! Otherwise you can watch your little mii run round the island :)

I put a movie on the laptop and watch both. So greedy.
  • I used to exercise with Wii Fit. I loved the yoga on in, although that wasn't a huge calorie burn. I would recommend Just Dance 2. I get a pretty decent work out and it's really fun!

Any of the Just Dance (there's 3 of them out there now) are fantastic! Some songs are faster than others, but if you really put some effort into doing the moves, and not just moving the controller to get a good score, you can get a great workout! I always sweat like a pig after about 20 minutes or so.

The Wii Fit is really good for more than just a calorie burn, too. Some of the games, like the skateboarding, obstacle course and the running options are serious workouts if you really try, but most of the games are about balance and posture. For me, I like that about it.

I've heard great things about Zumba for the Wii, but haven't been able to try it yet.

And just because something is fun, doesn't mean you're not working hard enough! That's part of the reason I bought Just Dance 2. If I set myself up to HAVE to do stuff that's hard work, but not fun, I'll quit pretty quickly. I like being tricked into exercising, to a certain extent. :)

I lost about 15 lbs on the Wii.....Then stopped. Ugh..... and gained it back. It works. Just make sure you use all the exercises. I also have Wii Fit Plus. They will make workouts for you or you can make your own. The catergories ar youth, overindulged, posture, and one more. I just started wth it again and am so out of shape!. Once I get used to doing 40 min nonstop. Ill program all aeorobic exercises. They also have strength training which I find very diffulcut and yoga. But what keeps me going are the games. Everything switches every five mins so I don't get bored, which is usaually my problem. Also once I'm finished my girls try to beat me and we wind up taking turns which ups my exercise time with little to no effort. It usually take about 15 minutes for me to start sweating. But once I start I dont stop until Im done!

Also when you reach 30 min. (they don't count time between exercises). The little scale jumps up and down and makes noise. I LOVE IT! and also when running, stepping, or doing yoga and strength my girls hunker beside me and try to do it too. Soo funny! and great encouragement. Were all smiles afterwards.

Specific games: Hula Hoop, Chicken Fly, juggling, Some type of Karate, Stepping, Boxing, Bubble Run, Skiing, Obsatcle course, Snowball fight, etc.
