Are "ethnic" Halloween costumes a bad sterotype?

I saw this article today: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/26/living/halloween-ethnic-costumes/?hpt=us_t4

I happen to like dressing up in the outfits of different cultures when I get the chance. I was Cleopatra last year and for Halloween this year will be dressed in a Chinese costume. These were both in good taste (nothing derogatory) and I thoroughly enjoyed them and finding or making the elements for an amazing outfit.

What's your opinion?

I believe its absolutely in bad taste just looking at the pictures that were displayed in the article...what's celebratory about those costumes?

I didn't see anything in those pictures that dignified the depicted ethnic cultures whatsoever, right down to the stereotypical names.

It seems like another chance for some to revel in the display of "blatant ignorance"

Some of the costumes they picked for their campaign are bad, yes, but how is a geisha any more derogatory than a can-can dancer or a saloon girl? I think people are smart enough to know that all Japanese women are not geisha, and there is a lot of beauty in both the costume and and the stories behind it.
Maybe the point should be making those costumes respectful instead of saying they are bad and promoting stereotypes.

It depends on the costume and how the person in the costume is acting. I believe some ethnic costumes are inappropriate, just as some non-ethnic costumes are inappropriate. For example: dressing up as a can-can dancer or saloon girl is different than a white female dressing in a sari with a red dot on her forehead. It would also be inappropriate for me to dress in a wrapper and dance around like I know what I'm doing. I think we can agree that anyone dressing up in KKK garb is inappropriate. If the people wearing the "ethnic" costumes are behaving in a stereotypical way, then of course it is offensive. It's never cool to mimic or make fun of someone's race, culture, or religion.

    That's just my humble opinion.

Amen. Since when are we supposed to dress in "good taste" for Halloween? Ah, the lovely world of political correctness.

Seriously there is nothing bigger in the world going on than people complaining about F'N Halloween coustumes?!?
Maybe if people put more effort to solving REAL world problems instead of worring about someone putting on a Geshia costume we wouldnt have as many problems.

    Hi Folks,

Preview here, of a new guideline we'll be rolling out when we roll out Groups very shortly. I'm posting it here as an explanation for the deletion of a few of the posts in this thread.

    4) Show Respect to All Groups and Individuals

No derogatory references to sex, gender, ethnicity, religions, or sexual orientation, or endorsement of violence against any person or group, even if couched in humor, will be permitted. This includes expressing stereotypes about any group or community.

Discussing the pros and cons of various ethnic costumes: no problem.

Posts that endorse or promote a stereotype: I'll delete 'em.

    Thanks,
    Steven

I think everyone needs to grow a thicker skin when it comes to race.
If you want me to be tolerant of your race / religion, you're gonna have to be tolerant of my views, even if you do not agree with me.....

    F*** Politically correct.

I'm so gonna buy that shirt that says "Diversity Stole my Bike"

Just to piss off the politically correct people. The best part is, you would be hard pressed to find a minority person that gets offended, it would all be white people!

I'm not a racist. This crap is going too far. Its a damn halloween costume. So its OK to dress as a hillbilly, white trash, white gangster, or whatever, but anything that can be construed as a racial type costume isn't allowed?

Go find something that MATTERS to complain about.

Abso-freakin'-lutely. Halloween is a time of fantasy and make believe... and bad taste. It's why I love it so much!

Are certain costumes tacky? Yes! But are the tacky ethnic costumes any more insulting than a slutty nurse or a psychotic butcher of a doctor?

I love art, fashion and history. When I was an Egyptian in my early 20s, I spent hours in the school library researching design to make my collar and loincloth historically accurate. Granted, they were done in sequins over a satin minidress, but the motifs were historically relevant.

I can understand being upset or annoyed by bad stereotypes. But consider the source. Is a drunken d-bag in a tacky costume really going to make YOU look bad, or are they just making themselves look bad?

They are definelty taking it too far.

Of course thats not who YOU are....

Everybody is different and its halloween so of course costume manufacturers are going to put am emphasis on a cultural costume to try and make it funny for halloween.

    CALM DOWN PEOPLE!!!

I saw this black guy dressed like a slave one year, my jaw literally dropped. Cotton in his hair, lash marks on his back, torn up clothes and the kicker............a noose hanging from around his neck. But then I figured he's a black guy so he can do that and not catch flack. Should any other race attempt it..........HELL NO. But that was a pretty extreme costume.

It's interesting to me that we are not allowed to discuss religion but Halloween is fine. Halloween is a religious holiday for crying out loud!

That being said, I think ethnic costumes are fine ie. Geisha, American Farmer, so long as there is not a stigma of stereotyped racism involved. If the costumes is truly representative of the culture and not ie. Plastic feathers and polyester mini skirted Pocahontas.

Going in black face as a vaudevillean performer would most likely be taken as a racial slur. Would it still be a racial slur if the wearer were a person of color? I honestly don't know but I'm curious. That's a bit off point but it came to mind.

My family is Italian and people dressed in Mario Bros. costumes don't bother me neither did Father Guido Sarducci for those old enough to remember the SNL character.

And for that matter, Halloween is an ancient pagan Celtic holiday... should I get offended that everyone's mimicking my ancestors by even celebrating it?!

While I do think sometimes our emphasis on being "politically correct" and putting on "kid-gloves" to not offend anyone can be a little extreme, I do find a bit of a problem with becoming another ethnicity for Halloween.

I don't think there is anything wrong dressing up as a character. Someone cited not being offended about anyone dressing as Mario Bros. because they were Italian. To me, I don't look at Mario and think "Italian" I look at Mario and think Nintendo. Just like if anyone was going to be Snooki, they'd be Snooki not all Italian people.

Maybe this is because I come from a really diverse neighborhood, but I think the costumes in the article were really offensive. I don't mean to call this out, but if you haven't really experienced prejudice based on your ethnicity or background, then it's hard to understand what it's like.

To you, it might just be a funny costume and you might not be a racist person either, but there will be people who look at someone in a 'Geisha' costume, and just say you're being an Asian person. It's the problem of stereotypes that make the costumes offensive. Not everyone will feel that way, but I'd personally rather think of something else to be for Halloween than take the chance of offending a friend or even a stranger.
