I am new to drinking protein shakes – I drink MyProtein Recovery XS because I was tired of aching so much the day after.

My question is, how do protein shakes fit into your daily calories? Do you incorporate them into your daily amount? Or do you have them as your exercise calories?

  • I guess you could say I incorporate them into my daily allowance, since I drink protein on rest days (Sunday) as well as workout days.

Bung em in like anything else.. Means less food for me and that can be tough if I'm on a cut but.. It's calories like any other so in they go...

Protien shakes are protien which is a food. Protien isn't exercise, so they aren't 'exercise calories'. How many shakes are you having in the day? I wouldn't substitute them for real food, but having the shake after your workout is the better option.

    both.

My macro split on caloric intake 40% protein (I tweaked it up to this over time), 35% carbs, and 25% fats. A lot of people find somewhere in the 30% to 40% protein range helpful for recovery purposes.

I usually have a shake between meals, and then 1 post workout.

My shake is 1.5 scoops of whey powder with 1/2 cup of unsweetened almond milk and 1/2 cup of water.
  • Just one a day and only on days when I do strength training. Cardio goes unshaken lol.

I don't use up my exercise calories, I just wondered if I should eat food up until my limit and then use the shake as my exercise calories
