Depo Provera problems...???'s

Options
So I got the Depo shot the middle of August and have been in Hell ever since. I have so many side affects I can't even list them all...the biggest issues are weight gain (8 lbs so far), tired, achy, dizzy, headaches, etc. Anyway, my Dr has agreed that this is NOT for me and we will NOT be doing a second shot! My question is for anyone who has been on this and maybe had some similar issues...or someone that has gone off of it...How long are these side affects going to last? I won't be getting another shot in November, but I know that doesn't mean that on Nov 15 the drug will magically be out of my system...but does anyone have any experience with how long it takes? I know that everyone reacts differently, but any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance for any info, suggestions.

My daughter had the same issues as you and gained a lot of weight. Seems like it took abot four months to get out of her system but once it did, the weight came off pretty fast. Good Luck

OMG. Don't get me started on Depo-freaking-Provera.

I started the shots after my second child was born. The doctor talked it up. This was in 2001. He made it seem like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

My mental state deteriorated so fast. I put on 80 pounds in SIX MONTHS. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what was going on. The doctor said it "COULDN'T" be the Depo. So I started doing some research. I found website after website of all the bad things that people have gone through on that stuff.

I did 3 rounds of the shots, which means, effectively, it should have been in my system for 9 months. Well, a year after the last shot, I still hadn't gotten my period, none of the weight had come off, despite my very best efforts and I was still struggling with mental issues.

It took about 18 months for my periods to come back. I honestly think that it made "permanent" changes to my physical and mental makeup.

So...yeah...Hopefully since you're here and working out, it will flush out quickly, but stay as FAR away from it as you can.

I've been on Depo Provera for about 10 months now and other than bleeding a lot in the beginning I haven't noticed any problems. I have gained weight, but that's on me for eating crappy food and feeling depressed and not getting out of bed.

It sounds like it's most definitely not for you! Luckily you're only one shot in meaning it will wear off fairly quickly (four months is fast for a concentrated dose like Depo). I hope you're feeling back to your normal self soon :).

I have been on Depo for 5 months and for me it is the best thing since sliced bread LOL. I have tried every other method of birth control and have had horrible side effects on everything....any type of pill gives me severe migraines and mood swings as well as weight gain.
I had the mirena and after 9 months of pain, extreme mood swings and weight gain I had it removed.
I started the depo 5 months ago and my moods have been stable the whole time, I have no bleeding and no headaches! I started exercising and watching my diet 2 months ago and already nearly lost 10kg! Trying to loose weight on the other types of birth control was like swimming in peanut butter (very hard!)
    Find what works for you!

After my last shot, it took me a year to get a period, a year and a half to start ovulating, and 13 months for the weight to budge. Depo has nearly destroyed my body, and now I'm seeing infertility specialists. Oh boy.

BUT since you are only doing one shot, your body might bounce back quickly. I've heard all kinds of different stories. Some ladies aren't really affected, and some have issues for years. Good luck!

Like you said, it's different for everyone. I used to have to get my shot sooner than you're supposed to because I would start bleeding like mad after only a couple of months. I didn't have all those side effects you had though.

For those of you on it, beware that you should only do depo for 2yrs max as it causes loss of bone density.

    I hate depo.

I went on it after my son was born and loved it, until he started solids and stopped needing as much breast milk. I was back down to my high school weight and within six weeks I gained almost all of my pregnancy weight back (30 lbs). I thought my husband had shrunk my clothes, until I stepped on a scale.

I've been off depo for a year and a half ttc, with no success. The doctor says this is normal coming off the shot. Are you kidding me? If I had known this going in I NEVER would have taken it. I'm turning 28 , so I should have plenty of childbearing years left, but my mom started menopause at 33, so I'm getting nervous.

Some people don't have any problems though, I certiainly did.
