Poor quality food vs. good quality food

I've been pondering this for some time. I was going to Starbucks the other evening and noticed that about 3/4 of the people sitting outside were visibly overweight. I commented to my friend that America (including us!) is just getting fat. Then a revelation on the Starbucks menu.

I love a white-chocolate mocha. A venti-white-mocha is 630 calories, 69g sugar, 29g fat -- and this is without whipped cream. Dietetically speaking, this is a very poor quality choice. Scientifically speaking it's a choice that nature can not compete with -- that is nature has very few foods that pack 31.5 calories to the ounce.

The problem is, we have evolved to demand these "high" quality refined foods (and drinks) without the need for them. We tend to shun lower calorie density foods for various reasons, including that it's "too hard" to eat (peeling an orange, and so on). We gladly slam down an orange soda, but can't remember what an actual orange tastes like.

This next part will anger some, so feel free to skip it! A lot of moderately overweight women I know bitterly complain about the men around them only wanting "twigs". Likewise, many of my guy-friends both average and overweight want "twigs." This includes me, although I prefer to call it "athletic". Moreover, the women are equally demanding of fit men, though they prefer a slightly softer look than say a body builder. I can't say I blame the men or the women either.

So, from my now dented soap box (from me standing on it  ) I declare that I am going to choose poor quality foods and love them. That is foods that don't pack a 31.5 calorie per ounce punch and leave you wanting more food after eating 1500 calories in 2 and a half minutes. I will preach these "poor" foods to my friends and family. Together we can thin down America so that 3/4 people outside a starbucks aren't overweight.

Thanks for reading my book :blushing:

Err, I wasn't clear enough. You're right, most women don't want "twig" men, but rather more "fit" and a little chub even, but definitely not too much  It's always bad when women refer to you as "the squishy man"

PS... love your trampoline gif

We haven't "Evolved" to eat crap,,, we just invented the oven, and then invented pastry, and now prefer it 'cause it's delicious and satisfying. Given the choice, most of us will act like children and eat candy and skip the vegetables - even though we know it's not good for us.

Would you guess that the crowd in front of Starbucks is "Average"? I'd guess that people who are lining up to pay $5 for a cup of coffee are a unique and self selecting group. I honestly don't know, 'cause I don't go there. I'm a different kind of coffee snob, grinding my own 8 o'clock beans and putting them in a french press.

About the body types stuff,,, well. Mrs. and I met in our early 20's and we were both pretty fit... Then we had kids, then we got heavier, then we got miserable, then we decided to get healthy again. We're doing it together, and after 22 years together we generally knock the crap out of whatever we decide to do. I loved her when she weighed 160, I loved her when she weighed 250, now we're getting back to where we belong, but it don't matter.

SO glad to be off the meat market.

Honestly I don't think we are fat because of the food quality. We are fat because we sit down all the time. My grandmother talks about how the ate fatback and biscuits every morning. They used lard and ate everything from the pig that could be eaten; however, they were skinny as rails. They had to walked 5-10 miles to get to 'town'. They had to pick cotton and plant their own gardens and tend them. My mother said she didn't sit in the house as a child they stayed outside all day playing or walking.

So if we worked as hard as they did 'back then' we could have the latte and not be fat.

ivykivy, I believe we are a fat society because of inactivity AND poor food quality. Combine those with poor food choices, and it is no wonder we are so obese.

Just an FYI..I have never ever ever been to a starbucks or bought anything from starbucks?
    Am I the only one?
BUT I'm not a coffee fan..don't touch the stuff...even before starting here in jan of last year

I do pass a starbucks daily driving back and forth to the kids school and notice lots of hip/slim folks
