Ok, so I'm fairly new to running..First I had an issue with my left ankle..That finally got better..Now, after I run my left knee/muscle really hurts. When I get home I ice it and keep it up for a while.

I try and incoroporate running 3 days a week..on my "off" days from running I do elliptical. My question is, should I have it looked at? or is it something that needs just to get worked out?

Part of me thinks its just another small hurdle that my body needs to overcome, on the other hand I don't want to really injure it which may keep me off it for a longer time.

Thanks in advance,
Dawn

im not say this is happening in your case but it seems a lot of overweight people begin running/jogging too soon. all that added weight can take a big toll on the joints. my plan is to stick to walking, high intesity interval training, swimming etc... until ive dropped enough weight to start running again.

Go to main page and click on the your mail tab and I will help you with your problem...
  • Strength train. True, you may have an underlying issue and should go see a doc, but 9 times out of 10 be building the muscles in your legs to support your knees, your problems will go away.

I used to have a really sharp pain as soon as I hit a mile. A therapist said it was a tear and there was nothing I could do but NOT run. I did ChaLEAN Extreme and 3 months later was running a half marathon with no pain.

The most important thing I can suggest, is to invest in a good pair of running shoes. I highly recommend going to your local running store (not the big box store) and having your gait and step analyzed. You might need a shoe that offers more support. I discovered I am an over-pronator and need to have shoes that keep me from rolling my ankle when I run. You can then either purchase directly from the specialty store, or do some research online and find something similar. Take it slow, maybe try something like C25K. Good luck!

I would suggest paying attention to how you run. Most times this kind of pain is caused by people landing really hard on their heal. Trying checking out the barefoot running style and the book Born to Run I am 300lbs and have no pain while running. So the running to soon comment is not true in my opinion. We just can't run as fast or as far, we can still run without pain though. I run in Vibram Five Fingers and land on the balls of my feet, not my heels. It takes some getting used to, but it really saves your body.

Knee issues can come from lots of things: shoes, running form, lack of joint strength, lack of connective tissue/ muscle strength, lack of stretching, pre-existing injuries, bio-mechanical flaws, and so on.

Ice, Heat, Ibuprofen, and resting the area are the best places to start.
