Pituitary problems and exercise

I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumour not long ago, and was told specifically to put any form of cardio or weight training on the back burner. As a bit of case history I lost 40lb two years ago while attending my local gym, and continued on with the exercise after the weight loss was achieved. I had some health hiccups along the way that were quite serious, so downsized my exercise regime - But was still able to continue.
Nowadays even though I would love to attend gym, I've been told by my Doctor that weight training and cardio would not be good for the condition I currently have. The tumour is hormone based causing excessive prolactin supply.. Considering that prolactin can cause low estrogen and testosterone levels (both of mine are next to nil), it would only aggravate the condition and make it even worse. I have to take in excess of 1200mg of calcium with vitamin D per day, along with a mega complex of magnesium.
I keep getting conflicting information from different practitioners on this issue: Exercise is good for building bone density, but naturally too much exercise can result in demineralisation (if the exercise is excessive and a person goes into overtraining). Because we aren't sure how much my body can handle, he has recommended none of the gym based exercises. We have yet to check my bone density levels considering that lack of estrogen can cause problems in that area. The last time I attempted to do some weight training was just before I was diagnosed. It took two weeks for my body to recuperate from a 20 minute upper body work out, which for me I knew within myself was abnormal.
I've seen some replies from P/Ts on this board. Is there any advice you can give to people who suffer from hormonal issues? I won't be attempting weight training in the near future because of what happened last time. But I will admit I am curious to find what other studies or knowledge some people might have on this? Thanks in advance!

I would trust your doctor's advice over anyone who claims to be a trainer on this forum. Good luck. :flowerforyou:0

This. I think your doctor is most knowledgeable about your unique condition. Anonymous people on the internet are not and therefore unqualified to give you information.0 -
Very true! At the same time tt has been hard trying to get the right information I will admit. Through the local Pituitary Network (PNA) there doesn't seem to be a general consensus amongst practitioners about what exactly is correct and what isn't. A few of the local Support Members have been suggested to do weight training, then another few have been told to do some cross-training from their own Doctors. Then also there are others who are told to do none at all. Of course I would take it that is due to each individual and their circumstances. But I would still love to hear some advice on swimming (which I do none of lol) since the Dr. did mention that was something I could do. The controversy/conflict between Doctors is that exercise is actually good to lower prolactin levels - What type of exercises they are though, no one seems to be able to pin point. Considering Doctor's don't really know, then I wonder whether a person who specialises in sports science would be more appropriate to ask?0
