I'm trying to walk a lot. My goal is 800 miles total by the end of the year but I want a good way to track mileage and all that other stuff that is good to track.

Right now I have a cheapo pedometer but I want to get something better and something I can upload onto my computer.

I have about 200$ budgeted for this and though I know what each does indvidually isnt there something that combines it all in one nifty package? Like a heart rate monitor that will also give me steps and upload information into my computer? I know the Nike+ system isnt a HRM but ultimately what is most important?

TIA
Fiona

I am a real cheapo.....I just use my pedometer or my treadmill miles and put it in as an Excel database on my computer. It adds itself up. Sorry I am not more high tech but it works for me.

There are some gps gadgets that are heart rate monitors. I am not in techno stuff but my husband was looking at one this morning by Garmin. It has a heart rate monitor and can track your exact course and tell you how many miles. Of couse this won't work for the treadmill or other inside gear.
If I remember correctly he said it coust about $159. I believe he was looking at ecost.com

Awesome and thanks..I will look into the Garmin. I'm a geek girl so I thought I could combine my gadget love with my weigh loss:)

Some of the Polar HRM's come with a foot pad that tracks your distance. It would be a little over $200 I think.

Otherwise check out mapmyrun.com I use that site to track my mileage, and (I haven't done this yet) you can download your HRM info from Nike and Polar right into the site. You just click on the map to map out your walking route (which you can save) and if you sign up for the free membership it will keep track of your mileage for you, and you can keep track of the mileage on your shoes, and your speed and heart rate. Very nice site if you want to keep track of your miles like that.

Don't quote me on this but I think there is an accessory you can buy for the Nike + system that will track heart rate. I may be wrong though... but I think it is in the form of an arm band.

I have the Nike + system and a timex hrm watch (which of course don't interface with each other) but I love them both.

The watch I think was about $129 cdn (It was a gift)
and the Nike + chip was $50. I have the shoes too but you don't need them. You can buy a plastic case for the chip that has shoe lace holes so you can wear it with any shoes. Do you already have an ipod?

I have also heard about the Garmin system in passing ...

I'm in Canada too:) I just bought Ascics so I would get a plastic case for the Nike+ and Yep I have an ipod Nano 4th Gen. Sportchek has the Nike+ for 50 here in Alberta and the Running Room is a few dollars less. I know Mountain Equipment has a couple of Garmins and Polar HRM too so I guess I have some more research to do too
