Indoor tanning

Do you tan indoors? Why or why not?
I'm very fair skinned and I used to tan quite a bit until last year when a very weird spot appeared on my face. I haven't had it checked out yet, but it's enough to make me not want to tan ever again.
I miss it though!

No, I don't. Primarily because overexposure to those harmful rays is carcinogenic. Secondly, I don't need a tan.0

I don't and all my life I've been so against it, but I'm very very pale in the winter and the seasonal change affects my moods. This year I might consider a little tanning to help my color and my moods, but I'm not sure.0

I find milky white skin much more attractive than Tanned anyday. Just sayin.0

I used to but I don't anymore. It's extremely harmful to your skin because usually when people go to indoor tanning places they don't wear sunscreen, eventhough they're exposing their bodies to harmful rays and they usually put on tanning oil which helps bake your skin quicker. Personally don't go back it's extremely harmful.

Tanning is so 3 decades ago. But some sun exposure is necessary so our bodies can make vitamin D. I think I get enough on my daily walks, but through the winter I usually take a supplement too.0

I'm very fair skinned as well...I did tan in HS for prom and stuff like that. I don't care anymore that I'm so fair skinned, that's who I am. Being tan doesn't make me a better or prettier person. There comes a point in time where you have to own what you're given Also, as a nurse, I've seen too many people end up with cancer from tanning, it is proven that it increases the risk of skin cancer and I've also seen skin cancer spread & cause some very serious problems. Also, my mom never tanned but had a lot of sun exposure and she has had multiple skin cancers removed!0

I do.....not as much as I'd like to (I have my grand kids a lot). I tan pretty easily since I'm Italian.
I live in Washington State......pretty gray this time of year.....great mood booster0 -

My boyfriend feels the same way! Score!0 -
I used to tan sometimes. Now I'm too busy to spend 20 minutes in a coffin lined with burning lights haha0

I like being pale.
I also like getting carded at 39. :happy:0 -
I cannot tan.
I do not sunburn either.
I burst into flame.0 -

I'm in south FL. We're the keepers of all sunlight and warmth during the winter. I'm simply not going to buy my skin cancer. I spend too much money trying to avoid the sun's damaging effects, honestly.0 -

EXACTLY! I hope to be carded for many years to come!0 -
I'm very pale (don't think I've met many people paler than me!) but I've never had any desire to fake tan, and I don't tan naturally in the sun, I just burn! I like being a pale English rose, I think I'd look odd with a tan. Plus it's so unhealthy.0

I fake it with spray tans and lotion. I am very fair skin and I have family members who have skin cancer. I love my life too much to risk shortening it for a tan!0
-
I dont, but i just wanted to say that you should get that spot checked ASAP. You don't want to have a hole in your face, right? Get it checked!0
-
vampires can't tan but yea i agree with ilv get it checked out soon!0

Hellz no! Used to be addicted to indoor tanning, and started to get age spots. All set w/looking older & possibly getting cancer. I use self tanners now.0

Consider starting a Vitamin D supplement. That's the good stuff that we get from the sun and it can possibly help with your mood issues in the winter. You might want to either do some research or consult your dr. to see how much you should be taking. There are other possible medications and therapies but that's something you can try yourself at home.
OP, I don't tan. I very stupidly *tried* to tan several times in high-school and really missed the mark. I'm very fair skinned and should have known better. The several times that I burned myself to a crisp trying to 'tan' probably did enough damage to increase my risk for skin cancers, all trying to 'look good'. The thing is, you don't have to burn to a crisp to do damage. 'Tanning' is evidence of damage done to your skin. Basically, there's no such thing as a 'healthy tan' - at least not one that comes from UV rays. Plus no matter how good anyone may think tanning makes them look right now, it's going to show in a not so attractive way when they get older.

Very bad idea. It's just as dangerous (if not more) than tanning outside in the sun.
The people that run those places should be charged with manslaughter.
Dying of skin cancer is not a pretty sight - I know this for a fact after watching my mum lose her 8 year battle with melanoma this year.
I like to look brown, it always makes me feel more healthy and summery (years of conditioning I suppose) so I highly recommend a fake tan.
PS. Please get that spot checked, picking up any kind of cancer early gives you a much better prognosis. And if it's nothing to worry about - it's much better to know that!0 -
I have done indoor tanning a couple times-- for two months during my freshman year of college, and one month right before my wedding.
However, I am not going to do so again-- it's just too risky. I had an atypical mole that popped up shortly after my second round tanning, and had it removed recently. Now they say I need to get checked yearly for more moles like this one, as people with this sort of mole have a much higher risk of melanoma.
On top of that, a friend of mine was actually diagnosed with melanoma recently (which is what prompted me to get the mole checked, and glad I did!!). She had surgery and will be getting chemo for a year... not fun stuff at all.
I feel like I look sickly when I don't have a tan, but I guess it's time to invest in some sunless tanner, because me and UV rays just can't be friends like we used to!! :ohwell:
(You should get your mole checked asap... better safe than sorry! When melanoma is caught very early, it's a 95% recovery rate, but in stage 4 it's about 5% recovery... so just get it checked, to be safe!!)0 -
I used to tan indoors all year round (for some reason - I will tan indoors, but only burn outdoors). After a few years of constantly tanning, I decided to give my skin a break and I took the last 6 months off from ANY tanning. I've decided that I'm going to start again after Christmas. I have SAD (the seasonal disorder) and it really makes me feel better when I tan in the winter months.0

I'm very fair skinned and there is a history of skin cancer in my family so I don't use the tanning booths. But I have occasionally gone in for a spray tan and liked it.0
-
No tanning at all for me..... indoor or outdoor. It's just not worth it.
I like my somewhat pale skin, I think it's pretty - on me AND others.0
