I am new to this, but I am going to try to change my foods to prevent symptoms.
Only thing I'm worried about is getting enough carbs in my diet. Anyone else have experience with this?
Look forward to hearing from you!

  • Fruit! some are very high in carbs :] what about potatoes/sweet potatoes?
  • I'm newly diagnosed as well. Its a major struggle for me living in a college dorm, but anyway. As far as carbs go, fruits and veggies have lots of carbs, otherwise they also make gluten free breads, crackers, etc. So that would get your carb intake up.

Don't worry about getting "enough" carbs. The US RDA's recommended carb levels are very high for most people. Everyone's ideal ratios of carbs / fat / protein are different, depending on your metabolism. But most people need far fewer than what's on the Food Pyramid or Food Plate or whatever they're calling it now. I'd consider the carb goal to be a maximum you try not to go over, and the protein goal to be a minimum you try not to go under.

When you're forced to give up breads, something I've found very helpful is the Muffin in a Minute page: http://www.atkins.com/Program/Phase1/WhatYouCanEatinthisPhase/AllAboutMIMs.aspx

These are really easy one-serving flaxseed muffins that only take a minute (literally!) to make, in a coffee cup in the microwave. You can get creative and make them any flavor you like, and that way you can whip one up for yourself next time your friends are munching on regular wheat bread products.
