Hey there:
I hope someone can tell me. I am a 33 year old trying to lose 75 lbs I quit smoking a few years ago and they say it is the hardest thing to do. I disagree, I think losing weight is. I have been overweight most of my life. how do I stop this cycle? Any advice would be welcomed.
Thanks
How about low carb diets anyone try that?

I agree with you. Losing weight is harder because you HAVE to eat each day!
I have done it 1 day at a time. Look around this site. There are members that have lost over 100 pounds. They didnt do it over night though.
I know of one who lost 135 in 16 months. Making good choices, adding exercise into our daily life, logging and be accountable.
This is something you can acheive!
Good luck to you:flowerforyou:0 -
Welcome, you need to look at it as a lifestyle change, and just do it, it's not easy but it's worth it.0

thank you for your advice, I will seach around the site for sure. I know when I was in my 20's losing weight seemed much easier. I can't believe I am in my 30's and still fighting this battle. To make matters worse I had a baby. almost 3 years ago and then had major back surgery, just to make the plight a little harder, exercise for me is almost not possible, except for little walks now. Thanks again for your post.0

Can you go swimming? That's a low impact exercise that's great for you.0

Actually I never learned to swim but i am thinking about taking it up, although the word swim suit makes me want to eat, lol0

 , who knows maybe you're a pro at it, and don't even know it!0

or maybe I will drown a fat person, lol0

My friend had a back sx and she uses swimming as her only mode of exercise, besides walking.
You can also ask the Physical Therapist for those rubber bands and do some strength training and such.
You are on the right track!0 -
You just have to do it one day at a time. There are going to be days when you just don't care becuase you FEEL like eating whatever you want. There are going to be days when you want nothing more than to stick to your calories but it just seems impossible to do so because nothing seems to satisfy you. It's okay. What works best for me is sticking to a routine. I work out in the mornings M-F, I pack my lunches and snacks throughout the day, and I try to plan my dinners according to how many calories I have left. On the weekends I try to get in some sort of physical activity, even if it's just going to the mall to tag along with a friend who wants to shop for hours. Hey...you're moving, right!? Find what works for you and tweak it along the way. Don't try to do it all at once. Make the food changes and start with small amounts of exercise if you're not used to it. I live alone so I don't have to worry about the tempting foods for other people but, if you do have to worry about that, make sure that the people you live with understand and support what you're trying to do because it's important to you. Good luck and you can do it! Even if you fall off the wagon for a while (my longest stretch was about 9 months but I maintained) you're always allowed to get right back on. :flowerforyou:0

In my opinion it's not even one day at a time, it's one decision at a time. Making many small choices to be healthier REALLY add up! Examples:
Park in the farthest spot you can possibly find from the store; you won't have to fight traffic, your car is less likely to get dinged from other car doors or shopping carts, and you get a little walk in! Every magazine has this tip, but how many people actually do it?
Realize that there are starving people, but that doesn't mean you need to eat everything on your plate. Never feel guilty for throwing food away! In fact, I often will get unexpectedly get a plate of cookies or muffins as a gift. I typically split one with my husband in front of the person, tell them how delicious they are (and they are!), thank them for the thinking of me and tell them how appreciative i am, and put the rest down the garbage disposal when they leave. This sounds REALLY cold, but i would rather the garbage disposal get the calories than me, and I truly do believe it's the thought, time and effort that they put into the wonderful gift that counts! (However, i would recommend that with close friends you tell them that you're trying to eat healthfully so that they don't go to the trouble!)0 -
I wouldn't try a low-carb diet, because carbs are very good for you. Just log your foods on this site, and if it looks like there is one arrea where you're getting too much of one thing (fats, carbs, sugars, sodium, etc.) try to cut down on that thing and even out your diet.0

Welcome:flowerforyou:
You've come to the right place. there is so much information and inspiration at MFP
I agree about taking it one day at a time (and sometimes one minute or one decision at a time)
I started by planning my day's meals ahead of time and sticking to the plan. I made the decision to not accept any food that was offered to me (if I had a plan, then anything extra wasn't on my plan)
After a week of making a plan and sticking to it , I began counting calories using MFP and making better choices about what to eat. I tried to learn something new as often as possible about nutrition and exercise.
good luck to you----you can do this :bigsmile:0 -
