Are all calories burned created equally?

I was just wondering does matter HOW you burn your calories? Say I burned 600 calories runnIng for 50mins and someone else burned the same amount on the stationary bike - who had the better workout? Or even if I burned 450 cals on the elliptical and someone else burned the same amount walking at a brisk pace. Does it matter what you do/affect your results if you burn those calories certain ways? Or does it not matter as long as you burn them?

I want to say that the only real difference that the exercise has is the muscles it works out. Obviously, you're going to be toning your calves while doing the elliptical. I'm not sure about that though...

certain exercises have a higher EPOC, but in reality it doens't add a ton more calories burned. i wouldn't sweat small things like that. get your diet in check as diet is 90% of losing weight

Strickly as far as burning calories 600 cal is 600 cal no matter how you burn it. If your thinking of toning and building muscle then yes different work outs give different results in that respect.

Actually, whoever elevated their heart rate, and kept it up, got the better workout :)

Yea when I'm on the elliptical I kill my butt and thighs doing interval training where I go on the highest level for toning then back down to level 12 at 85rpm. So I agree with what you said about muscle toning.

I think if more muscles are used it's probably better - I have heard that the "afterburn" or effect on your metabolism from weight training is better vs cardio, however weights burn less per minute than cardio. I wouldn't worry too much though as long as you're moving & having fun
