Stationary Bike

I spent 72 minutes on the stationary bike going about 14 mph. The machine says I burnt 300 calories but when I went to log it in even under 'very light effort' it says that I burnt over 300. Which do I go by??

    I go by the bike 'cos I think it's always better to slightly underestimate exercise and slightly overestimate food.

    This! I found that the numbers on MFP were not accurate at all for me, and the machines were only close when I input my age, weight etc.

  • Go by mfp because it goes by your weight. You burn more calories when you weigh more. and you burn less calories when you weigh less so MFP is going by your weight. Go by that

    I would go with what the machine says personally.

    Did you put your age and weight into the bike for it to calculate or was it just going by time? If it didn't know your details, it is probably calculating for the average joe. When a heavier person ie me, lol, works out, I burn more calories because there is a lot more body to move. So I would say the number MFP is giving you is targeted at your specific body. That's my guess anyhow. :) Good job on the work out.

    I go with what MFP calculates...you can change the calories MFP calculates manually if you feel the number is not accurate.

    I didn't enter anything in, I guess it was just going by the time. My friend told me I should go by what MFP says because she knows for a fact that the bike is off.

    You can create your personal exercises in My Exercises, just underneath the Exercise tab when you click on it. You can enter how long and how many calories burned, and call it something like "my biking". I've done that for walking the track at a speed not available in the MFP database.

    My recumbent bike has all of my info entered accurately and only gives me about half of my workout calories according to my heart rate monitor. My HRM and myfitnesspal are generally within a couple dozen calories, though. It is going to be different for everyone, but it seems like exercise equipment generally really undershoots calories. At least in my experience.
