I just signed up today so I am as much of a green horn as you can get! Nov 2009, I had my thyroid removed-cancer. Before I found out what was happening, I gained about 60 pounds and I was already about 40 pounds overweight (2006 and 2008 both feet had surgery and total hysterectomy which threw me into menopause!). I will be 57, going through job loss now and I have no energy. I am on 175 mg of synthroid a day, plus high bp. I need to get this weight off. If anyone has any tips, clues etc. I am open THANKS

    Hello, fellow survivor!

I had my thyroid out/cancer/Hashimoto's diagnosis in 2007. I was also already overweight, gaining weight sleeping like 14 hours a day, gained 60 pounds in one year, and was undiagnosed/untreated for over five years! It was actually a relief when they found the cancer & Hashimoto's after surgery. I literally said "ha! told you so!!"

Question: Are you doing radioiodine therapy? Hopefully if you do they give you the shot! I had to go off my synthroid and my TSH got to be over 200 (not a typo - 200!) before I could go back on the synthroid. Was seriously a walking zombie...

Honestly, now that my levels are good and I'm a couple years out, I feel GREAT! You'll be surprised how energetic you can be when you're stabilized.

I would suggest starting both cardio AND weight lifting (and not wimpy 5 lbs for like 200 reps - real weights!). You're going to find it easier (not easy - easier) to loser weight now that your thyroid isn't thwarting you. You have to make sure you don't lose muscle, which would then lower your metabolism. Plus, the older we get, the more likely we are to lose muscle and bone density, and weight lifting helps prevent both. There's also the nice benefit of just feeling strong. Nothing like it after being sick!

Good luck, and let me know if you have more questions!

You've had some good support from bgredenbaugh, and I want to say that I really admire yourr attitude, and the fact that you want to loose weight. If I can be of some small support - well - I'm here!
