figuring out calories burned?

I know there is a lot of different opinions over how you can calculate how many calories you burned on a machine. I'm really at a loss. I just got by what's on the machine, use the heart rate monitor on the machine. I don't know if I am doing this right.
I don't even know if this makes sense. How does heart rate/your weight play into it all? Does my current activity level play into it?
This all probably are ridiculous questions.

In the simplest terms, you expend more energy (burn calories) when your heart rate is elevated. It takes more energy to move a heavier object.
Yes, your lifestyle/activity level plays a role. People who are more fit must work harder/longer to burn the same amount of calories as an unfit person, all other things being equal.
The only way to accurately measure how many calories you're burning is to buy a quality heart rate monitor. Or, if you have the time and inclination, you can take your pulse several times each day and use an equation that can be found online.0
