Please help, do not understand what is going on....

Hi MFP friends,

On sunday, I was able to reach my 2nd mini goal of 189.8. However, ever since then, my weight has been going up. Monday it was at 190, Tuesday at 190.2, and this morning, Im at 190.4. Its not TOM so Im not sure what it is. My diary is open to all for a look, if you guys could give me any hints on why this might be happening, that would be greatly appreciated.

I am confused/upset because I was super happy on Sunday to see that I have reached my 2nd mini goal but now it is snatched away from me and I dont even get why :( Am I eating too much? Too little? Not exercising enough? :(

The only thing that has changed was: Sunday, I did an extra 20 min of cardio instead of a rest day; Monday, I started Power 90 strength level 3-4 instead of level 1-2; Tuesday, I started Power 90 cardio 3-4 instead of level 1-2

Please help me to shed some light on this situation, tyvm

    My only advice is to stop weighing yourself everyday

    that's a weight gain of like 200 grams. I wouldn't worry about it, you could have more snot in your nose to make up a gain as small as that LOL

    Yep. That's six-tenths of a pound you're fussing about. Less than 10 ounces. Less than a can of soda. You can pee or poop and lose more weight than that.

    Fluctuation is normal. Either don't weigh yourself every day, or understand that your weight is not static.

    My thought would be that your retaining water as your muscles repair themselves since you exercises you haven't done before.

    Give it a week and see what happens.. Fat loss doesn't come on over night nor does it drop over night. It takes time... and lots of it!
  • If you've upped the intensity of your workouts, your muscles are probably retaining more water, so this wouldn't be an unreasonable gain.

    firstly, dont weigh every day.

    secondly, the oreos for breakfast!? possibly not the most nutritionally balanced meal you could go for....

    do you log EVERYTHING? there are days where you havent even hit 1000 cals. not eating isnt a good way to lose weight and keep it off!

    stop weighing yourself every single day. pick one day a week, weigh in in the morning and stick to it. youre going to continue driving yourself nuts...i should know. i do it as well...so cut it out now :)
  • First off, give yourself a pat on the back for reaching your goal, celebrate that!! It iwas .04 lbs our bodies weight will flucuate. I can fluctuate up to 5lbs. Keep doing what you are doing and you will see that # again. You have done nothing wrong.
  • I have a mechanical scale, not a digital one, so if I had gained 0.2 of a pound I would have no idea! And I think I'm much saner that way. I only see when I lose a pound or two, other changes are so minimal and natural that it's nothing you should worry about.

    i'd stop weighing regular i was doing the same but then switched to only weighing myself once a fortnight because i would get upset when it fluctuated up and down x

    Fluctuations are normal, annoying but normal. Same thing happened to me, met a goal then went up 2 pounds. Today I am back down.

    Its really disheartening to see that my body is changing in a bad way haha. I hope that the weight cuz of new exercise will go away soon :frown:

    If your gonna weigh so often make a note of the fluctuations so you know when its normal for you.

    eg previously I would 'gain' up to 5lbs per day in water or from food when I ate alot of carbs.. when I changed my diet I now only gain by 1lb a day on days I'm really low carb... over weekend I ate more carbs as nothing else left in house and my weight went up 2 lbs.. today its back down to what it was at last weigh-in.. as I stayed really low cal yesterday loads of water and got rid of the excess water (and had been to the bathroom!) .. so I didn't put on 2lb of fat just from one chocolate bar and regular tortilla wrap with scrambled egg inside it! (not to mention the scampi and chips!)

    Also you mentioned increasing exercise to another level.. I'm assuming that's gonna be harder or heavier weights than previously? (I don't weightlift) which is probably gonna result in body retaining some water. Have a few days off and see if it goes back down!

    Body weight fluctuates like that. As you eat, you're gaining weight. As you drink, you gain weight. As you pee or poo or sweat or anything like that, you lose weight. Fluctuations like that don't matter. They are part of life. You're certainly still losing fat, which is the aim of diet & exercise. When we say we want to lose weight, we don't really mean that. We want to lose fat. Weight is just a way of measuring that fat loss. And a very imprecise way at that. I'm sure you're still losing fat, even if other factors are leading to a small weight gain.

    If you're getting disheartened when you see fluctuations like this, you should stop weighing yourself daily. The key when measuring weight is to look for a long term trend, not short term fluctuations, which happen all the time. Once a week is more than enough to see trends like this.

    What's going on?

    If you weren't dieting and weighed yourself every day, you'd still find that your weight wasn't steady: it might fluctuate by as much as several pounds. These fluctuations in body weight are commonly due to:

    Water retention
    Glycogen stores
    The amount you've eaten

    Water Retention

    Water retention is caused by drinking too little water, or eating too much salt. If you don't drink enough water, your body will cling onto its water supplies; make sure you're drinking enough. And if you eat too much salt, your kidneys hold onto water instead of excreting it.

    Women commonly retain water during the few days of the month just before their period. This "phantom" few pounds will drop off as quickly as it went on. Some medications can also cause water retention.
    Glycogen Stores

    Glycogen - sugar - is carbohydrate stored in the liver and muscles; usually more than a pound in total, along with three or four pounds of water. This is your body's energy reserve, and gets used up during the day if you're not taking in enough carbohydrates to supply your energy needs.

    When you eat, your body replaces the glycogen store and the water that goes with it - leading to a weight gain on the scales, even if you've only eaten a moderately-sized meal. This is absolutely normal and should not put you off eating carbohydrates!
    The Amount You've Eaten

    Don't think about the meal you've just eaten in terms of calories - think in terms of weight. You could stuff yourself with pounds of fruit or salad for under a few hundred calories - but these pounds will show up if you stand on the scales straight after a meal. (Just imagine weighing yourself with all that food in your hands.) Once your body's had a chance to digest it, that food will disappear. The same applies with water - which has 0 calories, but definitely weighs something!

    I agree with the poster who suggested not weighing every day. Also, increasing your workouts could be causing you to retain water (muscle soreness = water retention). It'll go back down. Don't get frustrated!!

    Exactly what I was going to say! The smallest changes can cause fluctuations. Just keep doing what you're doing and it will catch up in the end!
