How often to weigh? - Opinions

:noway: :noway: What is your opinion on how often to weigh? I've always tried to once a week. However, I'm starting to realize just how much that number makes or breaks my day/week/etc.! I didn't think it was such a problem. Then I began realizing that, for instance, when I'm congratulating myself on completing my food diary, exercising more than normal, have a little extra energy, etc., my mind still goes back to THAT NUMBER (and of course, I'm immediately deflated). I'm seriously considering waiting until Dec 1 to weigh again. Then the thought of that makes me panic! I guess I do really have a scale fixation. Give me some advice!

Sounds like you're a scale addict =/ It's a hard thing to deal with, but you can't quantify health! Realize that the number on the scale has little to do with how much you're really improving your body and your life. I suggest you try to wait until December, and just focus on how you FEEL rather than what the scale says! Weight naturally fluctuates so much from week to week that weighing in so often doesn't mean much in the context of trying to lose weight. Good luck!

Try weighing yourself two to three times a week. This way you will be able to see if you need to tweek anything that you've been doing.

I'm the exact same way, and you will just have to find what works for you though. I've found that changing how often I weigh myself didn't really change my mood about the number on the scale. I just had to learn to "let it go". Realize that it might not be what I wanted to see, and hope to see a better number next week.

I personally weigh in once a week on Fridays (because I'm usually my worst over the weekends). I sometimes get a bit addicted and weigh in everyday, and that drives me crazy even though I know something as little as drinking water can mess up what the scale says. I've also tried telling myself that I'm not going to weigh in at all for a month....I usually don't do well here either, because I'm not monitoring myself...kinda like "what you don't know won't hurt right?"....until that monthly weigh in comes in and then I'm usually really upset by that number.

This is why I say you have to find what works for you. I have friends that were getting upset and decided to only weigh in every 2 weeks, or monthly and it helped them. For me though, it was all about my mind set when it came to the scale.

Never. Switch to a measuring tape. Inches matter, not pounds.

Once a month works for me! And if that day falls around TOM or after a big splurge such as a holiday, I will put it off until the next month. I lose real slow and even though I know in my head its about how I look and its more of a size I'm after than a number....if I don't like what I see on that stupid scale I still let it get to me.

I am much happier and now actually see my losses.

What you should do... is weigh in whenever you want. BUT measure yourself every other week or so :D Those measurements keep me sane :D

I weigh myself every other day but only record/take seriously my weekly Monday morning weight.
  • My body also fluctuates a lot - even week to week. So many things factor in... did I have a lot of sodium the night before (water weight) am I PMSing... things of that nature will always affect my weight. Also, if you are working out, you are gaining muscle which weights more than fat - and it really plays a number game with your head when you are feeling and looking so good, but the scale doesn't comply with your feelingsl.
  • In my opinion, it depends on you. If the scale affects your mood, then definitely don't do it every day. I weighed several times a day every day when I first started because I wanted to spot a pattern in daily weight fluctuations. Now I only weigh once every morning, and the reason I do that is because it helps me stay on track. It doesn't affect my mood if I'm up a pound or don't lose, because I know I'm doing what I need to be doing and I understand my daily fluctuations. If I do gain, I know it will come back off. Some people absolutely panic, and I don't think daily weighing is a good idea for them.

I only weigh once a week, however I've had to tweek my weight in day because like you, the scale could make or break my day.

I used to weigh on Thursdays....but if I got bad results, I would go back to bed without working out, figuring what's the point?

This would also make me eat badly and start the weekend early. However even if I had good results, I felt like crunch time was over and I could start my cheat day early (my cheat day is Fridays) figuring I have a WHOLE week before weigh in again.

So now I weigh in on Fridays because I do not usually work out on Fridays so a bad weigh in won't deter a work out, and it's my cheat day anyway so I likely won't feel comelled to eat even worse depending on what the scale says.

I weight several times a week (sometimes)... I feel like I can tell what my numbers will be or if they will be high or low so that tends to determine when I weigh myself..... What I don't do is I don't record or Check In my weight unless there is a deficit... but I keep a check on where I'm at so I don't get carried away.... I work out quiet a bit so I tend to lose pretty slowly, but I try not to get down if the scale doesn't read what I want it too, but honestly it does me the same way it can make or break my day/week/month!
  • Hello :)

I've only been on MFP for a week, so I weighed myself today just to see what I had achieved weight wise given the effort I have been putting in :p:) I feel great and was even happier when I saw I've started to lose my unwanted kilos!! I'd like to only weigh myself monthly, as well as do my measurements, because of the fact that over the space of a weekk or even a month my body will fluctuate...although I'm not sure how well I'll be able to stick to that haha!

It is up to you, but if it is really starting to influence you I'd change it, even for only a month to see if your perspective changes...

    Goodluck x

I used to freak out every time I looked at the numbers. But for some reason, I changed my train of thought and now think of the numbers as a grade. Not for how bad I've been but to see if there's improvement. I have a scale that weighs you then tells you how much you've lost since your last weigh in. Also, for true accurate weight, weigh in the morning before you eat/drink anything and after you use the bathroom and wear minimal clothing. I weigh daily and when I don't see improvement or my weight goes up, I'm disappointed. But that is natural. You cannot expect to lose the same amount of weight every day because your daily eating and exercising routine changes. Focus on the "improvement" not the numbers. And if you struggle for a while, that's ok too. As long as you are trying and focused, the weight will come off. Stress and disappointment will not move the scale in your favor. In the words of Dory (haha), "Just keep swimming" or lyrics from SuperChick, "Just one more, go one more". You got this. The scale is not something to be afraid of unlike spiders, snakes, heights, the dark, etc.

You got this... Keep it up and don't let it get the best of you. That's how most women hurt themselves and give up. Please don't do that. You are awesome.

I've gotten to the point where I weigh myself almost every day, I only log it on Sunday though. It helps remind me not to attack the Halloween candy

right now i'm a little bit of a scale addict too. I like to weigh on fridays and than again on monday's. that's so i can see how good or bad i did over the weekend. I read that it's best to do it once a month. In the past when i lost weight, i would measure it in how my clothes fit. I know muscle weighs more than fat, so the scale might discourage you. Right now, i'll keep doing my friday and monday's.

I weigh every morning but only log it on Mondays.

Maybe I am weird but I like seeing how my weight fluctuates. I dont get discouraged if i see a low number and the next day a higher one because Ive learned that the low number always shows up again within a week and is usually even lower than the first time i saw it.

Personally im thankful for my scale. I avoided it for way too long and when I finally stepped on it, I got the jolt I needed to snap out of my downward (upward?) spiral!

just do what you feel is normal...everyone here is going to have a slight difference of opinion. i weigh everyday, but i also understand that its going to fluctuate. I really dont worry too much about my weight since i know i am sticking to my goal and have remained focused.
