975 cals burned too much?

Hi,
I'm new to MFP. Just discovered the app on the iPhone a few days ago and now the community. Fantastic site/app! Anyway, I have started keeping an eye on what I'm eating and exercising, only one day gone. We bought a free standing heavy bag last week and I have a Polar FT4. I know the calories burned could be inaccurate, but yesterday I did 60mins workout, I kind of mixed it up as I went a long, few mins flat out on heavy bag, few mins moderate (in the (mythical?) fat burning zone), then some situps, skipping etc. After the hour the FT4 showed I had burned 975 calories. I actually struggled then to reach my calorie allowance for the day! I missed it in the end by 300calories but didn't feel hungry, although I realize my body still needs the calories. But back to my question, is that too much? I know there is a possibility of burn out by doing that every day but I really enjoyed it yesterday and looking forward to it again this evening! I was never a fan of the treadmill (got painful shin splints), but between the heavy bag and other things I really like this and actually want to work out!

Reason for exercise is general fitness (I have a desk job) and get rid of beer belly

Seems a little high for your height & weight. Make sure the HRM is set correctly. That said, I occasionally get big burns with my HRM as well as low burns. I just go with it and figure it will balance out. If it is accurate, there is nothing wrong with burning that many calories if you fuel your body properly.0

975 is great! A good rule of thumb is to be somewhere between 10-15 calories per minute, but getting up to 20 isn't bad. The more weight you lose, the lower that number will drop. And don't worry too much about not eating all the calories you burned. As long as you don't go under 1500-1800 calories a day consumed, you won't go into any kind of starvation mode. Good job at mixing it up with your heart rate, too!0

Yeah I checked the details in the HRM and they were correct. My average heart rate for the hour was 165bpm (as far as I remember).0

Nope, a great workout. I aim for at least 500 but prefer 600 cals per workout 5 days a week and then do a 1000 cal workout on the weekend. Michelle Bridges recommended ( from the biggest loser). Just be consistent and you will see results, oh and the slimmer you become the harder and longer it is to burn cals! Good luck.0

I don't think that is too much. When I go on my long slow runs, I will burn up to 1200 calories. Once I went for a 3 hour bike ride and it came to 2000 calories. I think you are fine and so is your HRM.0

Sounds like a fun and entertaining workout. I too enjoy mixing a few different things in my workout to keep it fun. Just remember that your body NEEDS to rest to repair and build muscles. So don't over do yourself.0

Welcome! That sounds a little steep to me, but not impossible if you were REALLY pushing it the full hour at max HR. I'm a male, your height, just a little less weight and a little older and i can barely ever break 800 cals in an hour on my Polar FT40 - and thats in an all-out insanely tough workout maxing my HR over my so-called limit of 180. But everyone is different.. Regardless, be sure to get rest days between workouts that big and DO try to cleanly eat back most of your calories. Feel free to Friend me if ya want0

I did Body Pump last night (55mins) then 20 mins on the treadmill and clocked up 766 cals! Max heart rate was 186 (min was 152) - whoa nelly!!!
Like everyone says, eat back your cals so you're consistent each day with how much fuel your body is receiving!0 -

Thanks, yeah I had stupidly forgotten to factor in calorie allowance + burnt calories and I ended up a bit low on in take. But I'll learn!0 -
I will burn 10-12 calories per minute doing bag work (punches and kicks). That's after I subtract the TDEE. I'm 5' 9", and weight 154.0
