I've heard before not to eat after 8pm-mostly b/c people go to bed right after this and don't get a chance to burn their food off. Not really an issue for me. I eat dinner around 5 or 6. I've been losing weight at a snaaaail's pace since having my daughter two years ago. I've only lost half of the 65lbs I gained (it was all baby weight I assure you-which actually frustrates me more b/c if it was all in the belly how did I become so untoned in the legs and arms SO fast?? but I digress...) I've managed to cut out caffeine and the majority of processed foods from my diet (prepackaged, fast food) and my one and only vice left is fruit. I enjoy having some fruit and cream (homemade whipped cream) after dinner. I was talking my lack of weight loss over with a friend of mine and she told me that one of the instructors at her gym recommended not eating fruit after 6pm b/c the body cannot digest it properly before you go to bed and all that sugar turns to fat. Is she right? Do I have to give this up??

Unless this gym instructor has an advanced degree in internal medice, go ahead and dismiss everything they say as utter crap. Eat your fruit. It's delicious and healthy and wonderful.
Oh, and the reason they recommend not eating after 8pm has very little to do with how well your body digests food (although eating and then lying down can cause heartburn), but is more about the types of food people choose to eat after 8pm and the fact that most people on regular schedules have already met their caloric needs by that time and everything after that is just extra.0 -
I agree...eat your fruit girlie, it's nutritious for you. I don't know about the home made cream ( although, I would love to eat that in a heartbeat ). If your daily calorie intake allows you to have it.....have it! Don't deprive yourself. Don't forget to workout though. Good luck on your weight loss.0

Dave rocks....
And, my supervisor is an RD who works for a major university and heads up several comittees, and even has a fancy smancy advanced degree from Purdue, said not only to ignore the sugar count from fruit but to enjoy it when ever the mood strikes, our bodies need the nutrients found in fruit, even after 6 pm.
And in my book she trumps any gym instructor
And And, lol, you shouldn't consider fruit a vice, maybe the homemade whipped cream, but def. not the fruit0 -

I concur!
I have actually heard that eating fruit late is not good but some advice you just have to brush off and do what is best for you and your body. That is what I do. I had a Bally fitness instructor tell me the other day that I am not working out right but I have lost 15lbs in a month (11 since I joined MFP). So whatever, I am doing something right and I will continue!0 -
The ONLY believably scientific thing I have ever heard about eating carby stuff late at night comes from Jillian Michaels. She says that the insulin spike can disrupt the release of the hormones that help you lose weight. Eating fruit with a bit of protein would pretty much negate it, and even without, Jillian admitted that was getting down to the super nitty-gritty--your body is a highly evolved organism, not a delicate Barbie doll. It was more in the context of "If you're eating a bowl of ice cream right before bed, don't come crying when you don't lose as fast."
Plus...fruit is whole, delicious, and good for you. And it has fiber.0 -
Thanks for all the input (and yes, crap is a fantastic word!).
This is the recipe I use if anyone is curious. And I don't use a lot. Just that little dollop at the top to make it look fancy. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Whipped-Cream/Detail.aspx0 -
I sure hope you can eat fruit after 6 because eating fruit has helped me avoid my ice cream before bed fix. I will eat that apple and imagine it is a doughnut every day if I must! :huh:0

I'm going to be a personal trainer in a few months, and I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with this. I know SO many PT's or fitness instructors who have no education in sports nutrition trying to pass on whatever they just read in Muscle & Fitness.
(I do have an education in sports nutrition though, so I promise you can believe me, although whether you want to listen or not won't bother me. )0 -
Songbyrdsweet, you are one of my gurus! I'd probably listen if you said that apple fritters were thought to prevent breast cancer. Aw hell, I'd shovel down a couple before any "new" research could follow!
Seriously, I might be asking for a personal trainer as a birthday gift. When selecting him or her, I'm going to casually ask a few questions that will be based on "Would Songbyrdsweet know this?" If the answer is bogus...then I'll pass on Mr. Mad-Trapz.0
