I read this article earlier. I was surprised by the number of people who carry some sort of "fat" gene. I was not surprised by the fact that exercise can "trump" fat. It's sort of a classic heredity vs. environment argument.

I skimmed it, and I think it's silly they actually did a study. It still all boils down to calories in vs calories out. Move more, eat less and you're bound to be healthier regardless of what your 'genes' say.

Very interesting article, but not something that surprises me. I believe that many of us are "genetically predisposed" for a multitude of things including, but not limited to obesity. I think that obesity is probably one of the few things that we have a propensity toward through genes that can be controlled through diet and exercise. And not diet as in restricting what you eat, never reveling in the marvel of a perfectly put together cheesecake...but diet as lifestyle change as in educaiton, nutritional awareness and tools to help us learn what fuels our bodies need. I also believe that that education begins early in life and that much of the fault of obesity lies with our society and the way that the family structure has broken down. Fast foods...enormous portions touted as the norm.....bigger is better mentality....children left to their own devices after school...school cafeterias selling sugary sodas and junk food as "lunch"....parents lack of accountability.....the list goes on and on. For my own situation, I overate. Pure and simple...over ate and didn't exercise. My fault, my accountability.... I own it and only I can change it. Am I genetically predisposed to be obese?? Maybe...but my own habits led me all the way down that road and I could have stopped and taken charge anytime.

    Interesting.

I do believe that some people are predisposed to obesity. Pay close attention to families.

Take mine for example. My mother was obese (she had gastric bypass), my grandmother is obese, my great-grandmother was obese & my maternal grandfather was obese. There's definitely a pattern in the genetic line.

HOWEVER, what we choose to do with that predisposition is ultimately what decides our fate. I may be predisposed to be obese, but I'm choosing not to be. I may have to work a little harder to avoid it than say, someone who doesn't have that particular gene, but that doesn't negate the fact that at the end of the day, being obsese or healthy is a choice.

    Choose your disposition.

That's an excellent way of looking at this topic. Thanks!
