Completely random, but I'm wondering if anyone has had an endoscopy lately. I have one scheduled for Friday, due to some upper GI pain, but I'm absolutely terrified of being sedated and having a scope put down my throat. If you've had one...what was your experience like? The good, bad?

I had one a few years ago and aside from the fact that it drove me crazy not knowing what happened when I was sedated it was completely painless.0

Oh I can totally relate--although, I'd rather be under I think. I don't know if I could have a scope down my throat and be awake, id have an absolute freak out!0

It is really no biggie- I have had 3, and there is a little bit of a sore throat upon waking up but it is so easy and they just sedate you, and the next thing you know, you are waking up!0

I had one to diagnose Celiac's Disease. They convinced me to not use sedation (then I wouldn't be out for the whole day). It didn't hurt, but it was really uncomfortable. They blow air into your stomach when the tube is in your throat, so you burp and gag all at the same time. Its really attractive! You hate it while its happening, but less than 5 minutes later you are done and will be thinking "That wasn't so bad!". It will be alright!!0

I have had two of them....Barretts Esophagus....don't remember a thing from either of them. The worst part is your own mind working against you! Good luck!0

Thanks for the replies so far everyone--I appreciate it! I'm sure I'll be fine, I just like to know what I'm in for. Sounds like its a good thing I'm not working later if I'll be a burping mess!0

Yes I had one because I had GERD and they wanted to check for cancerous cells.
Worst experience ever. I was sedated, but the dr. was an *kitten*.
Didn't explain the procedure well enough in my opinion, sedated me and waited a few minutes then asked me to turn my head and he started jamming the thing down my throat, I was gagging moaning and yelling trying to get him to stop. He had the nurses holding me down yelling relax relax. I felt like I was in an adult movie.
After the sedation wore off my throat hurt so bad from trying to yell and that thing down my throat.
I would definitely ask for a detailed explanation of how they will do and what happens if you get uncomfortable.
Oh and when I say sedated I wasn't completely under.0 -
usually you are not fully under... they call it "twilight" or conscious sedation
you just dont remember anything
good luck ... you'll do fine : )0
