People are always telling me "oh why are you always at the gym...youre so skinny you don't need to be watching what you eat.... theres no need for you to be on a diet you are so tiny" etc etc... when, I don't feel that way. Im 5'7 and 140lbs... pretty average I guess, but I carry myself well (wear the right clothes, I wouldn't leave the house if something didn't fit me the right way or if it showed a fat roll ) and I certainly dont feel 'tiny" but its so frustrating when people look at me like Im crazy when I say I have body weight issues! Did this ever happen to anyone else? How do you handle it?

I feel like we're in the same boat. I personally haven't found a good way to deal with it other than only discussing it with people I know are supportive or ignoring it.
It's hard to explain without getting too personal.0 -
Agreed! I don't even bother, I just ignore them.0

i dont have that problem, BUT yes, i would find it very annoying0

And I'm the one that NEEDS to go to the gym. lol0

you should say "well thats why....i go to the gym and watch what i eat"0

Yes - big time.
People do this to you because they don't know what else to say, it's as if the only conversation about weight/ working out needs to focus on something being 'wrong' with you.
So if you're too heavy you'll cop the 'You need to lose' speech.
As soon as you start working on it you'll cop the 'You've lost enough/ done enough now' speech.
In my opinion it comes down to the fact that people are basically insensitive and boring and have a severely limited ability to deal with other people's issues with weight.0 -
I always say, "well, I look pretty good with clothes on." LOL0

LOL...funny, I usually just say "you wouldn't be saying im skinny if you saw whats UNDER the clothes!!"0 -
i am 46 years old and have always been "normal" sized (although there have been ups and downs in my mind). i was an athlete in high school and in college and have always worked out in some way. nutrition and food have always been an interest to me (and sometimes an obsession). i have good days and bad days but overall i think i work pretty hard to stay in shape. i work in women's health and spend about half of my work day doing annual exams. i always talk about nutrition and exercise and get really frustrated when women look at me and say..."well, it is easy for you...you are little". really....i was up at 5am this morning so i could get to the gym and cook a healthy breakfast and pack my lunch before i headed to the hospital and office for the whole day before going home to cook a healthy dinner for my family and then be on-call all night. and then that same lady will tell me she doesn't have "time" to exercise or cook! ok...can you tell this is a huge frustration for me too?0

I give you all credit...but NOW...put yourself in our (a person who is severely overweight) shoes...We fight with 25,50,75,100's of pounds over weight. Then we see you slim people who are complaining about 5 or 10 pounds...it's not easy to swallow. Yes I know it all boils down to being comfortable in our skin...but the ball plays on both sides of the court for that...It's not always as easy as pushing away from the table...there can and usually are many more reasons behind being over weight. I'm not making excuses for any of us...but it sucks at this end also.0

YES. That happens to me..
I think people either think it's a compliment, or they're looking out to make sure you're being sensible (not feeling pushed to look like a model) - so I try to take it as such (even though it's initially annoying). My dad just did this today... I explained to him that I have gained a little weight over the last few years, and that I think it's a good idea to keep it in check now, before it gets too out of control and more difficult. That made sense to him, that seemed like a good explanation.
I think the people who support you - the people with good intentions who are just looking out for your self-worth - will take an explanation and understand. The people who still seem put off - well, better to know now that they don't support you than later. Spend your energy with those who DO support you!0 -
Given your height and weight, I honestly think you should be happy with where you're at. However, eating right and exercising is always a good idea, even if you are already thin.
It sounds like you and everyone around you are insecure.
Do what makes you happy, and stay healthy.0
