So with the up coming time change, how do you outside runners/ walkers/ etc. gonna find the time to exercise? I currently run after work at 4:30 but my light will be dim or non-existant soon. I'm not a morning exerciser either. I'll probably end up on a treadmill M-F :frown: :grumble:

Two of my sons are on the high school's cross country team, so I am up early anyway, so I get out for c25k run, but I have also gone at night in the dark. I stay on the street under streetlights.0

I am considering joining a gym for the winter months...where I go walking I am not that comfortable doing so in the dark.0

I joined a gym. My husband doesn't get home until 6pm from work, so I have no other time since we have children. But I do run outdoors on the weekends when I can.0

Normally I go walking, but don't when it gets dark so early. I have resorted to using the Wii. Wii fit plus, stepper aerobics & biggest loser for Wii, these keep my exercise goals going. Still try to swim & walk when I can.0

I run at night...I prefer it actually. But my streets are pretty well lit. I also make sure that I wear a light or white colored shirt and my shoes are extra reflective.0

I'm looking forward to it! The only problem is that there aren't that many street lights around here. LOL, I'm just worried about crossing paths with a skunk and not seeing it til it's too late! :laugh:0

well, I prefer to run during the day. I would use the treadmill if it got dark though. I am not happy about the time change, I know snow is just around the corner:noway:0

I run after dark - keep to well lit streets and wear something reflective. I have a few routes and vary them, and often meet other runners and dog walkers so feel perfectly safe. It all depends on the area where you live/run and how comfortable you are. Personally I love running at night, this evening I have been treated to the lights twinkling along the seafront and the crashing waves along the beach. Awesome0

walk/jog @ night. 2-3am. I work graveyard so my hours are all upside down and backwards. It's cold but I like it cold. keeps me going.0 -
It will actually work out perfect for me since I work out in the early mornings. My neighborhood is pretty well lit but the sky is just barely starting to turn pink when I walk back in the house after my workout.
I may not like working out outside once it's bright. Everyone can see then! :laugh:0 -
Ugh -- I feel you! I'm having the same problem. I LOVE LOVE LOVE to ride my bike, and I'd do it practically every evening after work. Now, I only get to ride on weekends. :frown: That being said, my hubby and I joined a gym last year and I figured it was time to make use of my membership. I found a few classes that I actually (surprisingly) enjoy -- a lot! I was pretty surprised I LIKED these classes because I'd much rather be outside than in the gym. I'm not big on the treadmill, stationary bikes or elliptical machines, but I do enjoy kickboxing and weight lifting. (And if I really need a cycling fix, there's always spinning!) Anyway, I figured I'd use winter to branch out some, and I'm finding that I kinda like it.0

Because of my schedule I mostly run in the dark (so was my last race)....even in the summer. I live in a rural area so there are no street lights. It's dark. So dark that if I don't wear a headlamp my eyes will adjust to where I can see where I'm going. However, couple things you can do to make yourself more visible.
I run on dirt and paved roads. There is some traffic. I wear a vest similar to what a road guard, or construction worker would wear. My wife bought it for $6 at the local big box store. I also have a headlamp that I bought at the same store for $12. I use it for trail running mostly. If you google running headlamps you will notice you can spend $85 on these things. I've had no complaints with my cheapy, but I understand I get what I pay for. I also strap all this on for night biking.
I have ran across some critters. I've even stepped on a skunk. Don't worry your shoes will smell normal after a month or so. I also see lots of shooting stars, lightning from far off storms, and some incredible sunrises.
If safety from human critters is your concern, by all means, do what you need to do to feel safe. But don't take your running (or cycling) inside just because it's dark.0 -

Is there a local school where you can use their track? Or maybe there is a bike trail or running path somewhere? I don't mind running in the dark, but even with bright clothing and reflective accents I am still afraid that someone won't see me. I think I would prefer to run on a track instead of the treadmill. Its like having a bigger hamster wheel.0

This is awesome! Thanks for motivating me to take my run back outside.0
