Hello! I am fairly new to the whole workout thing, I have had alot of different things told to me and just kinda wondering if anyone has anything to say about some of it.
So i am 24 years old, 270 pounds, 5'8"
I am doing Power 90, and they suggest a 1,200 calorie a day diet, which is pretty easy for me to manage. They say something about me being my size i should be taking in like 2,200... and the BMR calculators ive used say the same.

I am wondering if it is okay for me to do the 1,200 calories a day, or if it would be better for me to do the 2,200? or if one way will make me lose weight better? THANK YOU for your input!

  • Also my Calorie Counter on this site says 1750 for my daily because i put my goal as 180lbs. PLUS if i work out and lose calories am i suppose to eat more to make up for what ive lost?
  • no.. 1200 is too low for you, 1200 is the bare minimum for a girl.. im 6'1 306lbs, and for a 2lb a week loss, i eat around 2000 calories.. Any exercise on top of that for the most part, I dont eat back..

I suggest that you do what MFP is suggesting and eat half of your exercise calories back on top of that if you feel hungry and don't eat them back if you don't. 1200 calories is too little food to eat in a day and you will just end up spoiling your metabolism by doing that which will mean that after you reach your goal weight you will have to continue eating 1200 calories a day for life or regain weight and then redo the whole thing again in a better way so best to do it the right way from the start.

The 1200 cal will probably put you in starvation mode, so I would go with the BMR. Recall the BMR is the basic metabolic rate - or what the amount of calories you would have to be fed artifiicially if you were unconscious to sustain life. Thus 1200 would be way too little calories. There is a great podcast (without commecials at all) called fat2fitradio.com. The two guys who run it are very scientific in their approach and use good science to prove their point.
  • Also what do you have your weight loss per week set to? Based on your weight, you can pull off 2lbs a week..
  • Thank you for your input!
I have it set to the 2lbs a week, and at the rate that i've been inputting for my calories per day says that i will be 255 in 5 weeks. ill try adding more calories to see if it gives me a lower weight.
As far as doing the 1200 calories for the rest of my life and working out as such. if i see results and feel better i dont really see a problem with my keeping this up :P

And another question, do most people weigh themselves everyday? i feel if i did that i might get discouraged. is every week good enough?
