So I was thinking

I was listening to Pandora today and The Proclaimers came on. Now I don't know if anyone who would walk a thousand miles to show up at my door (except my overbearing mother), but it really got me thinking. I want to walk 500 miles....
I've never really set a goal like this so I'm wondering if I get a pedometer and count all my steps (each step being 22.8 inches) or walk a certain amount of miles in a day and give myself a time frame...like 6 months? hheeellppp please

I will have to google, but I'm pretty sure there is a website where you can log miles and it's in terms of a map of the United States or something like that. One of my friends used to use it for running.0

I would set it as a weekly goal to walk a certain amount of miles each week....find a realistic number and divide it by 500...I run 100 miles in a month, so I have a 25 mile per week goal...which is only 3.5 miles a day....walking it would take about an hour of your time each day....
So you could do 500 miles in 5 months
I would mark the mileage on a treadmill or outside route and incorporate it into your exercise....0 -
This would be such a fantastic challenge!0

If you buy a $20 pedometer, it will have you measure the length of your stride, so it will figure your miles walked.
The lady who posted above me, momof3and3, has an exercise ticker as a signature you could use to keep track of goals.0 -
mapmyrun.com gives you maps that you can draw your routes on and tells you the distances.0

Check out MapMyRun.com. You can map out a plan for your walks using a Google Maps style interface. It will calculate the miles for you and also calories burned if you want. It also maps out elevation changes and figures that into your stats as well. If you have a smart phone with GPS, they also have an app that you can download that will track your walk and log it to the website.
**EDIT: Oh and I forgot to mention but the site will also track your total miles walked.0 -

Rather than a pedometer, find a walking route that is exactly the distance you want to walk each day. You can use Google Maps or a site like MapMyRun.com to measure distances. Or, if you have a smart phone, install an app like Cardio Trainer. It uses GPS to map your walks/runs and gives you distance, pace, etc. It'll also track your total distance which will make it easier for you.0 -
There is such a site--it's called mapmywalk.com. You can map out routes and determine distances, etc. You can also keep track of your walks.0
