Plateau

Have been on the site about 4 weeks. Love it! I have lost 24 pounds in the last 6 weeks - the first 10 in the first 2 weeks before I joined Myfitnesspal. Now I am stuck. Haven't lost a pound in the last week. I eat 1200 to 1400 calories a day. I do water aerobics Monday through Thursday 1 hour in the evenings, I do deep water jogging 1 hour in the mornings Monday though Friday and I swim 3 hours on Saturday - for a total of 12 hours a week of exercise - compared with my couch potatoe days. Any ideas to get the weight coming off again. I really want to have at least 75 more pounds off by my birthday on Feb. 2. Help!

One week is not a plateau. A plateau is like 3-4 weeks of no change. Can't see your diary but usual problems are
1. Not drinking enough water.
2. Repeately doing the same exercises
3. No strength training.
4. Not eating back your exercise calories.
5. Eating the same foods every day, or eating the same amount of calories for each meal.
6. TOM
7. Too much sodium.
So check on all of these and see what might be hindering your weight loss.0 -
Um. Are you trying to be fit for life or just for a little while? If you're doing this for life, just keep eating between 1,200 to 1,400 calories and exercise, and you'll have the body of your dreams. Otherwise, you'll lose a little bit of weight and gain it back.0

WHOAH! Slow down! 24 lbs in 6 weeks is way too fast - you will regain that really quickly. I would aim to stay on the plateau for at least 6 weeks to stabilize your body which is probably in shock! And you are doing a lot of exercise and therefore building muscle. Keep doing what you are doing - your calorie intake seems fine although given the amount of exercise maybe a little light? Remember you didn't put the weight on in 6 weeks so why on earth imagine you can take it off in 6 weeks. Add me as a friend if you like but I will be honest!!!!0

Thank you! It's probably the sodium.0

75lbs off by Feb seems pretty extreme to me.
A lot of the weight that comes off right away is the water weight and some fat, it's going to get hard the farther you get into your weight loss, but no loss for one week isn't a disaster, though it may be very upsetting.
Changing things up frequently will help keep you from a true plateau, since your body won't have time to get used to any specific work out. Watch your sodium and sugar and drink plenty of water.0 -
I love the exercise - feel 100% better. Not having a problem with the food. You're probably right my body is probably in shock. I need an honest friend to help me with this. I have a long way to go. Thank you, G0

I agree with Fatbuster 205. I started losing weight in late February and hit a plateau in June that lasted until late October. It seems your body has to adjust to a new "set point" or average weight. Once it's convinced you're not starving, it starts dropping pounds again. Hang in there!0

Maybe try getting out of the 'comfort zone' when working out. If you exercise the same way week in and week out, the body basically goes 'Ho-hum, same ol' same ol'". It does for me anyway, plus I have to change up my diet periodically as well to keep the metabolism burning well. You'll find out what works for ya!0

Good for you, Georganna! I am on my 16th day, and am down about 4.5 pounds. I am feeling better already, and I know you are, too!
With regard to your dilemma, I am thinking that perhaps you may want to redo the math on that one. First, you're allowing yourself about 13 weeks to get 75 pounds off. I am an RN, and have struggled with my weight my entire life. I have read much information from various sources, all the diets, etc....you name it, I've read it (just about, anyway). Anything I have ever read (which doesn't come from any fad diets, etc.)--I'm talking about legitimate, health-promoting information, not glitzy ads and gimmicks, etc.--says that about the FASTEST you should lose weight, in a healthy way, so that it won't come back so easily, is at a rate of NO GREATER THAN 2.5 pounds per week. At this rate, you should be able to be approximately 32.5 pounds lighter by your birthday--congratulations!!! Remember, you are retraining your body to move and to eat more healthfully. I think the Biggest Loser show, etc., is great--it gives people hope that it CAN be done. But, the way they do it on that show, they've got trainers cajoling people up steep hills, etc.--extreme exercise for some fairly large people (don't forget, they also have doctors, etc. attending to them). They lose alot of weight quickly on that show. But, it's just not realistic for us everyday folks. So, if you are looking for these types of results, you're probably not going to be able to produce them at home. Slow and steady wins the race!
But, I think that at 32.5 pounds lighter, you'll feel wonderful and have an exquisite sense of accomplishing something great...I salute you!!0
