No one noticing?

Ok....so I have quick question. I have read in past forums that generally people start noticing when you have lost about 20 lbs. I have gone from 170 to 148.9 as of this morning (in about 4 months). I have dropped 2 pant sizes and 2 bra sizes. I am extremely proud of how far I have come, and I finally feel like I can really tell a difference. BUT...the only people that have said anything are my parents and a few friends who know that I had a change of eating habits. It is really discouraging that no one else has noticed. Two of my best friends haven't said a thing...anyone else in this situation?

Not many people noticed until I was down 30 lbs.. It doesn't seem like the people closest to me are the ones who noticed though.

Yes, but I'm not doing it for someone to notice. I'm doing it for myself.

No one noticed my weight loss until I was around the 30lb mark.

So as long as you notice, the rest of them can shove it.

Be proud of what you have accomplished!

Oh, nobody has noticed me, either. I started off a size 22 -- three months ago. I am now a size 16. Not a peep. *shrug* Oh, well.

Maybe they aren't saying anything because they are a little jealous?

It may be just that the topic is a little taboo.
Asking "Have you lost weight?", may imply that you overweight/fat before (which some people might take offense to).
I wouldn't think anything of it! Congrats on your accomplishments!

Maybe they are so used to seeing you, they just didn't notice. You're doing great! Keep it up.

One of my coworkers finally looked at me yesterday and asked if I had lost weight! I think because the weight came off gradually, the people that see me all of the time didn't notice the gradual change.

I had the same thing going on, and it took a while, and almost 40 pounds before anyone said anything, but perhaps you should see someone you haven't seen in a while, and someone like that might notice a drastic change like that. Also, sometimes people might be reserving comment, even if it is complimentary, for any number of reasons; in any case, 20 pounds is really a great accomplishment!
  • As somebody before me said, it could be that they don't want to mention your weight., as it can be a very touchy and taboo subject.

Ladies....just be open about it. That's my thing. I just tell people who know, or dont know, about my journey. Then you can always whip out a pic of the OLD you on your phone and they WILL notice.

I didn't hear anyone say anything until I was down 35 pounds. And it was mostly from people who hadn't seen me in a long time.

If they're people you see every day, like at work, it can be hard to judge because they see you every day and the change is gradual. Also, it is kind of taboo to mention. People I worked with didn't really notice mine (my students did!) but they did notice my rise in self-confidence.

Maybe people are just not comfortable saying something. I never want to say anything, unless it is really a big loss. I guess I just don't want to imply that there was anything wrong with the way they were before. People probably notice, but just aren't sure what to say.
  • At 20 lbs down - I hadn't heard anything. At almost 30 down, I have had a few people comment. And I agree that it is taboo. The more you lose, the more people will comment. While I'm losing for myself, the feedback is always validating. Congrats on the weightloss and keep it up!

I hear people don't start to notice until there is a 20lb loss but then it depends on how frequent you see certain people. It's one of those weird things. Could depend on how the person is viewing you? Some may be too afraid to say anything at all.

Personally I had several people notice my loss around 17lbs but I just noticed myself just last week after 3 months of dieting. The full length mirror made me really stop and stare!

It's worth it and keep up the great work!

some people are afraid to ask or say anything considering how easily people are offended nowadays. but ultimately you are doing this for you and if they dont notice too bad! or maybe they are jealous as well... i had a friend that refused to acknowledge anything good i did b/c she wasn't doing it for herself.

You look amazing! Thats all you need to remember!

Not everyone is jealous of people losing weight. Really.

The change may be too gradual for anyone to notice. Or, they might think the subject is awkward.
  • First of all congrats on the weight you have lost. That's awesome!! I have lost around 20 lbs. and no one other than my husband has said anything yet but I am waiting for someone to notice. In fact i was telling someone just the other day that I was waiting for this NSV but so far nothing. Oh well I will keep working at losing the weight and if someone notices I'm sure it will make my day and if not that won't keep me from continuing on losing the weight.

Trust me they notice! They probably just not saying anything. I went 5 sizes down (weird because I only lost 23.2 pounds so far) and I have 36 more pounds to go...Havent dropped a cup size yet :( and no one hasnt said much (except my parents and brothers), but I deal with classmates, friends, etc all the time since I gained my 50 lbs and they havent even noticed..or at least mentioned it. I catch them staring at me, so I figured they notice I lost something, but jsut wont say nothing. Dont worry about it! Do it for you! :)

Thanks everyone for the feedback! As sad as it is, this is the first time my weight loss journey isn't a diet. It is also the first time it is completely for me. I definitely can't say this for my past attempts which is probably why it failed every time before... Whether I get comments or not, I'm going to keep going because this is the best I have felt in years :) What's important is that I can tell and am making the best choices for my body!! (something it has wanted/needed for a long time)

Great job to everyone so far!!

Noticing weight loss is a funny thing. I agree that people may notice but not be sure what to say, it IS a taboo subject, people can lose weight from iillness, or may make the person feel awkward if they comment and find that you weren't TRYING to lose, etc etc.

Definitely true that people don't notice when you see them every day. My family never said anything until I started talking to them about it, and even then I had to actually ask my dad "Is it THAT noticeable..?" and his response "Oh yeah!!!" and to be honest that felt a bit bittersweet, it does make you realize you were "that big" before, etc.

I've continued to get comments and compliments since then and it always makes me feel good. It definitely is a great form of motivation but don't let it get you down too much. And if you are more open about your health effort, others will probably feel more welcome to give encouragement and feedback. Example: I was surprised when my coworker hadn't said anything to me about my losses but when I brought up how important health and loss was to me, he said "and you've already lost so much!" Shows he was noticing, just probably wasn't sure how to comment.

Are you doing it for them or for you?

They may just be rather unobservant or being politically correct - let's not play the jealousy card so quickly, folks.

I wonder why people don't complain when their friends don't say, "Gee - you sure have gotten fat!!" but they expect them to call out their weight loss? That's my head scratcher of the evening.

Paeli - Definitely agree with what you said. I guess I didn't think about it that way. Thanks!!

MrsCon40 - this time I'm doing it for myself which is definitely the key. I think the fastest way to fail at this is to do it for someone else :) and thinking about why people don't complain about not getting the "you've gotten fat" comment....I know I'm not going to complain about not getting a negative comment like that hehe

    Perception is evil.
What matters here is...DO YOU NOTICE? Of which you have stated that you do.

That is all that matters. Remember, you are doing this for You, not for someone else
