questioning my goals?

I am a 33 year old mother of 2 and I am thoroughly questioning what would be a reasonable weight goal for myself? almost 5 years ago I was able to lose down to about 156 pounds and was wearing a size 12 dress and size 8 and 10 pants. I have since had my daughter and trying to determine what would be a good goal for myself. I am busting my butt and doing it right this time. I originally set my first goal to be 175 by Christmas but I am already 4.4 pounds away from that. I've lost almost 28 pounds in the last 7 weeks. I would love to be 135 pounds again, but don't know if its realistic. Any thoughts? I don't want to set my goal to low. 150 is my ultimate pipe dream goal right now. I'm so confused. I asked my husband his opinion and I've been heavy for so long that he said oh a size 12 would be good right? I laughed and said NO. Bless his heart he has forgotten that I could ever be smaller then that.

    How tall are you?

I think your goal weight is going to be very dependent on your height, which you didn't mention.

Why not shoot for a size six in jeans with good muscle tone all over and not worry so much about what weight that'll be.

I think it depends on a lot of things...

First off, your height. How tall are you?

    Second, your body frame.

I'm 5'4" with a medium frame. Supposedly, the ideal weight for my height is around 118lbs. I am currently maintaining around 145lbs. There is NO WAY I would look good at 118lbs. I honestly don't think I would look good much lower than 140lbs. I have curves from having kids and with my frame, anything much smaller than I am and I will start to look sickly.

So, really.. it is all about your height, your frame, how you carry your weight, etc.

I carry my weight very well and by that I mean. I don't look like I weigh as much as I do according to anyone that knows how much I weigh. So if I say I want to weigh 135 pounds everyone thinks that I'd be sickly thin. I'd say I have an athletic build. medium frame according to wrist measurements I think if I did it right last time
  • Just shoot for 150 right now. Then re-evaluate when you get there. I'm 5'0 and my goal is 125 right now but once I get there, I'm going to decide whether I'd like to maintain and focus on toning hard core or drop a few more pounds. I have a bit of a larger frame and from a site I found, with my measurements the lowest I should shoot for is 123. I forget what the site was but it had to do with body fat etc and I know it was for a navy site.

I started out here at 221 lbs, size 20, I'm 5' 10". When I started, I was 48 and a half years old. Given that I was facing 50 in a year and half, and that at one point in my recent adult life I had made it down to 155 for about five minutes, I figured that would be too much of a challenge for my age. So I set a goal to lose 40 pounds over the course of a year, thinking about 180 would be manageable for my age, height, etc. and then maybe re-think things and go for another 10. I NEVER thought I'd lose more than 50 lbs.

Was I wrong!!! I lost 40 lbs in the first four months, 55 lbs in six months, and now I'm up to 73 lbs after one year! I am down to 148, the lowest I've been since maybe junior high school! Now I'm 49 and a half, and feel like I have never felt or looked better.

Point being...go for what you want to go for!!! You never know what you can achieve. I'll bet you'll hit your first goal and then keep going. Once you change your food habits for life, you'll find your equilibrium. The most important thing is to find out what food plan, diet or whatever you want to call it (lifestyle?) works for you and stick to it, and you'll find out how far you can go.

    Good luck!

I say... when you get to 175 (your original Christmas goal), re-evaluate. You're very close to that now, but wait until you get there.

Once you get there, set another goal - say 150lbs and work to achieve that. Once you reach that goal, re-evaluate again.

Thanx everyone!! My DH asked " If you just continue to eat the same calorie count and exercise like you are and lose weight won't you eventually get to that even point where your body doesn't want to lose anymore?" I answered with I think so... LOL Although I am working out harder and more now that the weight is coming off simply because its easier to workout and I feel so much better after doing so. I think I would cry for a week straight if I were able to be 135 again.

I think he's got a good point. Really, you'll see what feels right to you as you get to that weight. Shoot for 150 and see how you feel. It's really not the number on the scale that's the goal anyway. As one other poster mentioned, pick a clothing size and aim for it. Do that and work on toning up the jiggly areas as much as possible and the number on the scale will take care of it itself. You are the only one who can see that number, after all.
