Ebay - How long do you wait for payment?

I've been having problems with Ebay lately.

The first incident was someone who didn't read the listing properly, they bid and won the item and then expected me to give out my address for them to send me a cheque. In my lisiting I stated paypal ONLY. So I have had to open a case, but it's been over a week and they havent replied. Even though they were more than happy to try and pressure me into giving out my address. Then call me rude when I politely stated that the listing stated paypal only

Next problem is I have 3 items that have been won, but they haven't been paid for yet. I have sent them the invoices. How long do I leave it before I contact them again by message?

Thanks in Advance :)

  • cases i think you have to wait 10 days and if they dont respond you win, and people on ebay are allowed 7 days grace to pay, even if you would like the money sooner to post, its frustrating but its in the ebay rules that you ahve 7 days to pay after that though then ebay will send non payment strikes to the people

Well, you can set payment settings to state how soon you must be paid if this is a problem

If I don't hear from someone in 3-5 days I start messaging them regularly.

If you don't hear anything within a week, I would open a non paying bidder complaint, this usually gets them to pay.

If they are 0 feedback buyers, they could be new and inexperienced, or just people who aren't serious about buying.

(Ps- My experience comes from 12 years of selling on ebay with over 10,000 transactions)

check with Ebay. they do have stipulations if you are going to file a non-paying bidder claim.

    I wait a week, it's annoying but I don't think you can make a case unless it's been a week. :(

You can report someone after 4 days of non payment. I start sending a nice message on day 3 just asking the buyer to please let me know when I can expect payment. My experience is if they don't pay after 4 days, they're not planning to. Especially if they are new to ebay. If they have great feedback and a number of transactions, I give them the benefit of the doubt as they may be away or something, and wait a couple days longer. I feel your pain on absolutely clueless buyers. I've been selling for 10 yrs and have had to deal with SO many people who simply don't read the listing before bidding and then change their mind. The very unfair and annoying thing about ebay (well, one of the many) is that you can't leave negative fb anymore for a bad buyer so if they haven't been paying in the past, there's not a way for you to know.

I go by Ebays policy, 3 or 4 days. If I don't hear back from them after 3 or 4 days ( I think it's 4 days) I start the NPB claim.

Are you selling common items that the buyers are just getting buyers remorse and deciding they didn't want it, already found it, or found it cheaper somewhere else? Just curious

I've sold a fair amount but the items tend to be unique, like a car part for a 1960's car the buyer is unlikely to find very many examples of, or an antique rocking horse, so my buyers have always come thru. I've had a couple transactions go sour due to the buyer not realizing the freight expense. I've handled these by having the buyer agree if I don't report them they won't give me negative feedback. I don't want them ruining my good score becasue of their stupidity. Sure you can fight it or explain it, but your score still takes a hit. Better to cut your losses and move on.

You have to wait a minimum of 4 days, but if they're rating is high, I normally give it a few more days (as something might have happened) and normally I'll wait a week before I open a case.
  • That's okay. I'm not in a rush as such. Just wanted to get them out sooner than later as I work 12 hour shifts and If I work 3 days on the trot, then that's 3 days I can't get to the post office. I've got 3 days on the trot next week so didn't want people to have to wait even longer.

I'll give them until Monday and send them a general private message asking them to pay the invoice, and then a couple of days before I open a case.

As for the case already opened I'll double check the date, it has been a while now, coming close to 10 days I think.

I must seem like a right sod, but things are never as simple as read the listing, buy it, pay for it, are they?
  • Thankyou for all the replies :flowerforyou:

I'll give them the B.O.D until Monday and then get on their backs. I looked at all their stats and they have less than me, and I don't use Ebay an awful lot, put I have all positive feedback. However, they are all have some feedback and are in the UK.

As for the case already open, I opened it on the 24th October which would make it 11 days now and they haven't responded.

You'd love me if I ever bought anything from you because I pay very quickly. At times I even sit at my computer and watch the minutes and seconds tick down to see if I win the item or not. Then I pay immediately. I don't think there's ever been more than a few hours that have gone by after I've won at item before I've paid for it. I hope you get your payment soon.

as a seller, my auctions are set to automatic file for an unpaid item strike in 4 days against the buyer, and i really don't have to worry about it. a check isn't too bad. then you won't have to pay the paypal fees, but the buyer does have to wait until the check clears for you to send the item. i also have my auction set that if a buyer has at least 1 unpaid item strike against them in the past 12 mos., then they can't bid on my auctions.

as a buyer, i snipe auctions, so i'm not always at my pc to pay for the item, but i do pay within 24 hrs.

paypal will contact you when they feel like it. don't hold your breath. I had $2000 stolen out of my paypal account and it took a month to get the cases settled. good luck!

As an avid eBay buyer of 10 years I will say 3 days. There is an inherent risk with listing. After 2 days I will send an email reminding them to pay. If no response in 3 days, I will send one more. On the 4 day, I leave a negative post.
