HI guys,
I developed a raging uti today and now have a prescription. My question is, would exercise aggrevate the infection? I definitely don't want it to get worse but I just took 2 weeks off from my regular workout routine and don't want to take anymore time off.

I have had my fair share of UTI's & my doctors have always told me to take it easy. I had one doctor tell me not to lift anything heavier than a milk jug, so I would say no, don't risk it. When you have a UTI you usually have blood in your urine, so your bladder is irritated anyway. I would think excessive movement could cause that to worsen, but I'm just guessing.0

I don't think working out will make the infection worse. As long as you are taking your Rx then the infection should be under control. The question is if you feel pain or any discomfort while working out, then maybe you should take it easy at the very first sign.
Drink cranberry juice and lots of water. Hope you feel better soon.0 -
GO TO THE PHARMACY AND GET AZO <--- or something like that. It will stain your clothes. So I wouldn't recommend working out after taking it, but it will go away under 2 days. I love that stuff. Drink lots of water. Cranberry juice has too much sugar and calories , even the "no sugar added" is not the best for calories or sugar!0

Thanks for the advice - I took my first antibiotic pill and now the blood in urine part stopped and pain is less. I picked up cranberry supplements and have been downing water like a Sunday morning after a Saturday night in college. I think i'm going to go ahead and try my workout.
What's azo?0 -
AZO is a medicine that eases the symptoms of UTI. First time I took it I freaked out because I didn't have blood in my urine and this turned my urine blood red. Takes a few days to get it out of your system too but it stays long enough for the antibiotics to get rid of the symptoms.0

05/12/2009: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "The best UTI remedy so far the simplest and is the fastest is the sea salt remedy. The dose is 1 teaspoon of sea salt dissolved in a full glass of water, plus drinking the cranberry juice or mannose powder roughly 2 teaspoons x 5 a day will usually do it. The sea salt remedy is taken only one dose and there's no need to take an additional dose. The bacteria causing the UTI appears to have a weakness to salt. In fact drinking too much water reduces the salinity of the urine which encourages the UTI. Therefore addition of sea salt one dose should see a relief in pain within a matter of minutes. The maintenanace dose thereafter is only 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon per ONE LITER of drinking water. This is the most effective remedy I have found so far.
I found this while researching I'll give it a try

I recently had a raging uti that I couldn't get rid of.I stuck with my workouts and that feeling of needing to go to the dunny made it very uncomfortable and painful to finish them.I tried the cranberry juice and other herbal remedies before heading to the doctor.2 extra strong courses of antibiotics knocked it on the head but next time,I wont be working out.I think the fluids I used up during my workouts made my situation worse even though i drank a bit,and the pain was awful. My urals were my saving grace and got me through the hard patches when i started my first course of antibiotics.I ended up with(they think)a kidney infection due to the fact it was quite severe and I left the uti to rage for days.Best advice ive got,if you get a uti, head to the doc's asap,Once you can pee without bawling workout:)0

I was just diagnosed with a UTI and the doctor explained that I should avoid all lifting because I am taking Cipro. Apparently, Cipro can affect the connective tissue and strenuous workouts could cause a joint injury.
Walking, cycling, and swimming were approved but anything more intense than that is off limits.0
