How do you handle party calories??

Went to a party last night where everyone brought appetizers. I didn't over do it but I did have a few items that looked yummy (turkey pinwheels) and chose not to just grab food because it was there (lifestyle not diet is my mantra).
I tracked what I could and just did a quick calorie add (1,000) and listed what I ate in the notes. I know I probably didn't eat that many but I'd rather be safe then sorry.

How do you handle this type of situation??

PS: NSV - Wore a pair of white jeans I couldn't fit into just a month ago-the waist, butt and thigh were loose and they looked AWESOME!!!

I handle it the same way and log more calories that I think I really ate.

I'm so happy to hear about your NSV! Maybe next time try adding everything item by item to get a sense of how much you really ate; 1,000 seems a bit high, and I wouldn't want you depriving yourself of other food because you think you ate more than you did. I have the application on my phone, so I generally add as I go :D

Me three. Most people underestimate what they eat, so I agree in going big as well.

I agree that 1000 seems high. I can usually find something very close in the database for most things. I also use the phone app and add as I go when I'm out like that. I don't like using the quick add calories, because I like to track and get an estimate of other nutrients as well. Sounds like that you did great! Awesome job on the jeans!! I have a pair of tight pants in my closet just waiting to make their grand appearance as well!

Sounds like what I would do. Being a couple hundred calories to the positive or negative for one day isn't going to kill you.

I do it like i do with every 'unknown' food, I try to break it down to the ingredients, and then add a little to it to be on the safe side.

I have the app as well and to be honest I just didn't want to ask everyone what was in their dish (cream cheese shrimp dip) and I was too lazy to look up item by item by the time I got home :blushing:
  • I like the fruit and veggie trays....I also like the meat trays...Always track what you eat...PS maybe eat something before going...

I would handle it by not worrying about it too much. We are all gonna go to parties at some point, so log what you can, and and don't lose any sleep over it. Especially since you said you didn't over do it. I say it was a victory all around. You looked good in your jeans and showed restraint but didn't deprive yourself.

Personally, Im not a big fan of party food anyway...food that is sitting out, that people are dipping into and breathing on skeeves me out lol! Plus, most of it tends to be junk food, like chips and dip or other stuff and I dont eat anyway.

So, I usually eat before I go out to a party, and so I wont eat just cause Im hungry or cause its there... then that just leaves me with the drinks. I usually nurse one, two drinks tops the whole night. I havnt been drinking lately though, so I drink the mixers...like soda water with cranberry juice.

Other than that, Im wandering around talking to people...if youre working the crowd, then youre not around any one person long enough for them to notice if youre eating and drinking or not to point it out or anything.

The problem with parties, weddings, receptions whatever, is that it can be VERY tedious to break down/search everything if nutritional content is not readily available. I'm not talking about the veggie and cheese tray here or the glass of wine that can easily be tracked. I'm talking about things you might eat that are recipe based. If you didn't make it, it would be a guess at best in terms of ingredients, amounts, etc. That is an awful lot of work for something that will probably still not be accurate.

A good "tip" as the holidays are approaching is to limit party/holiday food to things that you can't get at any other time of the year. So if you have a favorite family dish that you only get at the holidays go for it. But skip things like mashed potatoes, etc. that you can have any other time of the year.
